Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

Let’s talk Jason X, which is marvelous.

Of course you need to consider the source of this opinion

There’s a John Carpenter made-for-TV movie on Criterion right now, I know what I’m watching this weekend.

I love it. They just said fuck it and jumped the shark and you know what? It works. Cronenberg has a small role. Nano technology. One of the best kills in the series. Space. Superior to Jason takes Manhattan and The Final Friday, though I wouldn’t throw out a single entry in the series.

None of these movies should be graded on the same scale as other films. But in the slasher category they hold a special place in my heart.

Im the same way with Saw. Some of the movies are just godawful, but the overarching storyline is a bonkers bloody soap opera that just wont stop making sudden turns

I remember seeing Jason Lives on opening night in a packed theater when I was 13. Huge party, it’s a great moviegoing memory.

Psycho II (1983)

I was in here beating the drum for this last October and I don’t think anyone went for it but I’m going again. Currently streaming on Netflix. Don’t read anything or watch a trailer. This sequel to Psycho is way better than it has any right to be. Fantastic score. Anthony Perkins returns as Norman Bates. Also has Robert Loggia, Meg Tilly, and Dennis Franz in supporting roles. A Psycho I & II double feature would probably be fire.

The Blob (1988)

Saw this one on LKJs list of spooky films he’s planning on watching. This movie is a god damn time capsule in the best way. Every time I watch it I’m transported to 1988. The gore effects are among the best you’ll see in the 80s from a film not named The Thing. Of course the scale pieces when the blob grows extremely large are are silly because of the limitations of the time. Takes place in a town like many other movies of it’s kind and time. There’s a bit of isolation to it which adds to the charm. Stars Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith plus a bunch of other players you might recognize.

I do remember Psycho 2 was pretty good when I watched it uh 20 years ago so thats pretty effuse praise from a guy who hates all movies lately. Can’t think of a lot of “20 years later” type sequels that are of any interest really.

I don’t think so? But actually I had since thought of it as one to add if I make it through the rest of the list.

28 Days Later appears to be unstreamable legally even as a rental, so it will probably need to slide off my list for reasons beyond my control.

Dang I thought that’s where I saw it mentioned.

Thank you sir.

Dude that’s awesome. That movie is so cool. They realized Part 5 was a bit of a misstep and they had to bring Jason back and just went fuck it, zombie Jason time. It’s just a fun movie that doesn’t take itself seriously at all.

I love the opening of Jason Goes to Hell. Fulfills the fantasy of what would happen if law enforcement found out and took the threat seriously.

Apparently Rewatchables has Poltergeist lined up soon. That’s another famous one I haven’t seen. I guess that’s going on the October list now.

According to my daughter, Kurt Russell from The Thing “kinda looks like” me. I’ll take it.

It also has one of those rare sequels that does something completely different with the concept.
