Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

Cause I loathe the first one and everything it stands for. Both in terms of narrative and it’s place in the movie business :grinning:

Audience reviews for Joker…

If you take away the JOKER character and see the series of films through the lens of a non-superhero universe. You will see a heartbreaking set of films of a broken human who got to a breaking point because of how horrific his childhood was. With that said, such story would have been told in one movie. However, we are talking about the Joker and get two movies to tell this story. For me, these movies are art films. They bring an over-the-top character to reality, which is a fun new way to see the Joker.

This movie was frightfully fun. Theres so much that is a bit hard to watch, right next to material so deliciously delicate. The artistic vision of leveraging music to paint the scenery was shear genius. Is the song in your heart, or is it, possibly, something else?

So let me say this, I throughly enjoyed the first Joker movie. But because of how much it is a mind crunch for me, I haven’t re-watched it since I first saw it in theaters. Going into this movie, I was a bit skeptical, because the first one was a bit of a masterpiece, and a true win for comic book movies. I just don’t think this sequel was as good as the first one. Don’t get me wrong, it IS a good film, but I honestly felt like the music numbers were a bit unconnected. And there were scenes where people would sing “When The Saints Go Marching In”. Not sure if that was a rallying call or what. Also, I found it disturbing how many people were rooting for Joker in this film. Those parts were a bit too much for me, especially considering how closely that scene looked to a certain event that took place in our world just a few years ago. Where I thought the film excelled at was, the duality between Arthur and Joker. The film did a good job of showing both sides of Fleck. The movie even starts off with a Looney Tunes inspired cartoon short, about Joker and his shadow. Lady Gaga as Harley, was pretty good. But she makes it clear who she is actually in love with. Overall, this is a good movie, but the songs just didn’t help the overall story, the constant smoking got on my last nerve, and I thought the ending was just weird. I give Joker Folie à Deux: 3.5 Laughs Out of 5

Not nearly as bad as people say it is a great movie with musical aspects though not fully embraced. The only issue with this movie is Gaga’s screen time which wasn’t nearly enough and also the ending felt quite dumb and pointless. Otherwise a very interesting movie definitely not bad.

Like the first part, the film is an exceptionally well acted psychogram. If you’re not expecting an action-packed DC experience, but rather a film with depth and resonance, you’ll find it a good choice.

But there are also a bunch of reviews that hated the movie.

I Saw the TV Glow

7/10

Meh

Bodies Bodies Bodies

8/10

When you take a step back and think about the movie it’s silly. Major plot points hinge on words like ‘No, your parents were upper middle class’. It’s about young female toxic friendships and drama so I’m not the main audience for this, but it’s so well acted and shot in a dynamic way that you go along for the ride.

7 Days to Vegas

5/10

The appeared to be the only unwatched, free poker movie on Amazon Prime, so I gave it a shot. Vince Van Patten stars as a washed-up 90’s TV actor who is such a amazing poker player he can support his wife and kid on just the winnings from the home games they host with celebrity whales. In fact, he’s so good they can afford to rent a classy space in Beverly Hills, supply food/drink, and NOT RAKE AT ALL.

Slimy Hollywood producer shows up (Sgt. Gottleib from BoB), and before you know it, Vince is broke from a Ponzi scammer, Gottleib has stolen Vince’s game, and Vince is apparently too stupid to realize he can go to a public casino/cardroom to ply his magic. Evil Gottleib and Vince hammer out a bet, loosely based on an almost prop bet involving Doyle Brunson, that Vince can walk from LA to Vegas in 7 days for 1,000,000.

The movie is just a mess, with Angry Jim (Don Stark from That 70’s Show) as an allegedly terrifying character because he constantly is loudly threatening to physically hurt someone, despite being short, old and a Dumbass.

The crowdpleasing ending to the bet is also really stupid. But Vince looks amazing at 61.

In keeping with The Fly discussion and the spooky time of year, what are the best known horror movies that you haven’t seen?

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is on my list.

Any torture porn

Saw films
Hostel films
Human centipede films

Fuck that entire genre. Would rather be forced to watch superhero films for the rest of my life.

The first Saw is supposed to be pretty good. Maybe I’ll try to watch it before Halloween. I’m told it’s not as torture forward as you might expect. I saw one of the Hostel movies on TV—maybe the second one. It seemed kind of dumb.

Original saw is great, way better than hostel and not really similar at all imo. Saw tweet earlier that people were walking out of terrifier 3 quick

Edit: about to see the substance

I think the main “problem” here is the script for the first film is just ripping off taxi driver/king of comedy and the second film they just wrote an original script thats dogshit?

I didnt like the first film. But I thought the script was largely good, albeit vapid because its ripping off better films without taking the themes from those films that made them so good.

Yeah, I liked it too. I think I tapped out after #2 or #3. Too repetitive.

I posted my list before October started, those are my big ones, but: TCM definitely merits the hype IMO. Hope you’re planning to see it.
