Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

It also has quite the roster of young superstars:

Academy Award winners: Nic Cage, Forrest Whitaker, Sean Penn
Academy Award nominees: Eric Stoltz, Jennifer Jason Leigh

Have any other movies had 5+ barely known, young actors who all became award nominees/winners?

A 3.5 is practically a rave from you, LKJ (and Clovis as well)

Surprisingly I donā€™t rate it much higher than you. I have it as a 4/5. I could go a little higher, maybe 4.15, if some of the CGI was cleaned up a little better before release. I mentioned it earlier but there are a few scenes where the CGI looks damn janky which is something I never noticed in Fury Road.

Anthony Edwards was the other stoner bud.

Anthony Edwards has had a decent career, but I donā€™t think heā€™s in a tier with the other five.

Of course not but he did spend many years as the lead on the top drama on TV.

Super looking forward to this. Everyone saying itā€™s back to his dog tooth and sacred deer roots. Aka weird as shit.

Looking forward to it also, but I sure hope itā€™s more Sacred Deer than Dogtooth. The former was pretty great; the latter was a bridge too far for me in terms of the utter discomfort it imposed.

Poor Things wasnā€™t weird as shit?

Not on the Yorgos scale.

Hell yea letā€™s go

Iā€™ve caught up on these now. Pearl is definitely the lesser film, but there was enough there that I canā€™t bring myself to call it a below-average work.

6/10

A movie about the 9/11 victim fund. Liberal process movies are interesting and thereā€™s a lot of drama about rules, when to bend them, when to follow them, how do we follow them and why, but they donā€™t make the best visual drama. Movies usually try to connect the abstract philosophy to real life by having the bureaucrats interact with the actual people and their lived drama. This one has the head of the 9/11 fund having to tell a widow that her husband had kids by a mistress. As such it misses.

Mogul Mowgli

5/10

Somehow Riz Ahmed finished the Sound of Metal movie and someone convinced him to make the same movie, but about a rapper that gets an autoimmune disease. The movie has some surreal imagery and Urdu is spoken but none of it is translated meaning you miss a lot of the conversations

Stop and Go (2021)

5/10

An ok comedic road trip movie during COVID lock downs to save a grandma from an assisted living facility. Didnā€™t ever burst out laughing but nothing really was a terrible dud either.

Jim Henson Idea Man is live on D+. Itā€™s solid, but feels pretty by-the-numbers and doesnā€™t stand out too well among biography docs. Lucy and Desi and Andre the Giant stand out to me as especially compelling biographies that were made well; this blends in with the larger number of these sorts of docs that are fine but nothing earth-shattering.

(Iā€™m a little salty that it never works in anything close to a full playing of Rainbow Connection.)

3/5, mildly recommended.

Go re-watch the Muppet Movie if you need some stress relief and cynicism reduction.

Except for the asshole and his frog legs empire. My wife was a little girl and is still traumatized.

Actually watched that one not too long ago. It doesnā€™t charm like me like the Muppet Christmas Carol does, but it works.

Someone on Twitter pointed out that the porn parody versions of superhero costumes look immensely better than the real ones and I went down a rabbit hole. Itā€™s wild, thatā€™s maybe the best live-action Batman suit Iā€™ve seen anywhere, itā€™s from a pornographic movie.

Netflix Daredevil vs. porn version, itā€™s not even close. Porn version is way cooler, look at the little details:

Are the non porn parts of the movies any good?

I havenā€™t actually seen the movie, Iā€™ve just seen these stills. Poster looks decent, too. Like a classic Alex Ross comic book cover.

I read recently about porn movies with over million dollar budgets. That didnā€™t make sense to me until now.
