Rewatching Slumdog Millionaire on HBO

I donā€™t know how many of you nerds are into classic movies or Shakespeare, but Iā€™ve been watching the 1953 film version of Julius Caesar and itā€™s just incredibly great. All of the actors are phenomenal, the production values are top notch. It was of that era where you could go balls out for a Shakespeare movie and fill a huge lot full of extras with huge-ass sets and gorgeous statues and everything.

And then thereā€™s yung Marlon Brando. At the time, Brando was riding the success of Streetcar Named Desire but also a lot of haters thought he mumbled and couldnā€™t deliver his lines properly. Man, Marlon Brando brings his raw sexual ferocity to the role of Marc Antony in every shot, itā€™s just amazing to watch. This sexy-ass actor with a chip on his shoulder who needs to prove himself in a high-brow Shakespearean drama, and he just brings it. I mean, all of the actors are really great (Caesar and Brutus are outstanding!), but Yung Brando just wrecks shop.

Rewatched Lord of War. Still holds up. Cage gives a great performance and just good all around.

Young Brando was so so good. He is one of the few who ACTS in all capitals at all time. So fun to watch.

Used Kanopy for the first time tonight and watched Hereditary. Holy shit Ari Aster is a natural filmmaker. So much flair. Canā€™t believe he made this when he was 30. And Toni Collette gives the performance of her life.

Way, way, way behind the rest of the world, but I watched Blazing Saddles for the first time last night.

Not completely sure how I feel about it. Did not like the ending at all.

Watched War Dogs the other day, itā€™s a very good movie as well. Jonah Hill is hilarious in it and Iā€™m not a huge fan of his generally.

Agreed. This hung with me in a way that no other movie has in a long time. Parallels a lot of the issues we run into with generational trauma and mental health issues.

Agree. Great film. What an ending.

Have you seen his followup Midsommer? You are in for a WTF treat if not.

I think of Ari Aster as what I thought Shyamalan would turn into.

We have Midsommar up next on Kanopy. Great service for free btw. Tons of art house / Criterion / A24 / etc.

I couldnā€™t stand Hereditary or Midsommar, but Iā€™m very much in the minority.

I mean, even if you didnā€™t ā€œlikeā€ Hereditary, I hope you can appreciate the score, lighting, cinematography, editing (!!!), etc. Just a masterclass in filmmaking from a true auteur making his first feature. Incredibly impressive.

I canā€™t even remember the last time I was as blown away by those from a filmmaker I was unfamiliar with. Children of Men, perhaps.

This is dumb af man. No one gives a shit about lighting, editing, score. Folks just want to sit down and like the goddamn movie. Be entertained. Weā€™re not editing aficionados or lighting savants or enrolling in a FILMMAKING MASTERCLASS. Weā€™re watching a goddamn movie. If I donā€™t like it whatā€™s the point.

Which isnā€™t to say that that the lighting, editing, score, whatever, isnā€™t important. It is! But you donā€™t say to a restaurant diner oh well you might not have like your souffle of songbird gizzards and lemur kidney, but you must appreciate the presentation. Surely that was worth it. Fuck you my man! If I canā€™t eat my food what are we even doing here? And whereā€™s my goddamn steak?

Iā€™d say lightning matters much more in the theater than at home but editing ~always matters. Good and bad editing stands out same with score ofc

And by steak I mean the director cut of Michael Bayā€™s Armageddon with extended commentary by executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Lol

Edit: I would venture that quite a few people ITT (Risky off the top of my head) give a significant number of fucks about those things as they pertain to filmmaking. Maybe just dorks that were Engllish / Lit undergrads care, but Iā€™m one of them. Our film program was a good chunk of the English department at my Uni. Speaking of, Vivre Sa Vie is on Kanopy as well. Been wanting to rewatch that since watching it for my French New Wave class a million years ago. Remember really liking that and A Bout de Souffle

In 2017 Dunkirk and Blade Runner 2049 were my two favorite movies, and the score/editing were gigantic reasons why. Does this matter to everyone? Obviously not, but theyā€™re major reasons why these films will be thought of beyond their 6 week theater run.

Of course all of it always matters. But the restaurant analogy is apt. All the elements of good cooking are important and contribute to the meal, but you donā€™t have to actually know anything about any of it to appreciate the final product. And indeed, expecting someone to like a meal just because it only was made with the finest ingredients and using the best technique is like saying that, well, OK even if you didnā€™t like the film you must appreciate the lighting, the editing, the score. No, motherfucker! I donā€™t care how well shot or well edited your movie is if itā€™s boring as fuck. I donā€™t care what sort of technique you employed in your dinner, even if it did incorporate only the finest duck anus and goat testicles.
