Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

I think that’s moving the goal posts a bit. I don’t think people are saying that you should like a bad or mediocre movie because of one aspect. I appreciated 1917, but I think the “gimmick” only did so much for example. But it really can separate a good movie from a great one.

For once that potato guy has a point. Who gives a fuck about film scores. Talk about duck anus.

Hereditary is a movie with a wide disparity between critic and audience reception. It’s ok that you prefer Michael Bay’s Transformers 6 to David Lynch’s Blue Velvet.hereditary

well, I was replying to this

Now I haven’t even seen Hereditary, but I do take umbrage to the idea that you have to appreciate the score, lighting, editing, whatever, even if you don’t like the movie. People don’t watch movies like that. They don’t separate the movie into those discrete elements and judge each component. They watch the movie. They decide if they like the movie. That’s it. The lighting, score, editing is all important but it’s all subconscious and 99%+ of the moviegoing population is never going to say oh man the editing and lighting was great but the score just ruined it for me. They’re going to absorb the movie, all of it – score, lighting, editing, acting, whatever – and they’re going to like it or not.

actually I rather enjoyed both films

Don’t think there is specifically a “TV” thread, so I’ll post this here. Just found out that the show “Robbie” premieres on Comedy Central after The Daily Show tonight. I mention it because my three-quarters of my family are extras in it. Doubt any of us will be in the first episode.

“Robbie’s life may not have panned out the way he thought, but this small-town ice cream store manager, church-league basketball coach and unexpected father isn’t ready to give up on his dreams just yet.”

My son is one of the kids on the basketball team in a couple episodes. I’m the coach of the opposing team in one episode. My wife is someone in the crowd once. I have a really cool team picture the director took that a parent then gave me. My son posing with Rory Scovel and Beau Bridges.

dlk9s jr has been waiting for this forever. He used the money he made to buy an Oculus Quest, which he is trying to make a game for right now.

Yea I obviously don’t agree. Take Joker for example. Did I like it? Not really. The score was really unique and effective. The set and production design were good. Phoenix was obviously great (though definitely not his best performance). I didn’t feel like I wasted the time I spent watching the movie even though I didn’t really “like” it at all. I can appreciate the good pieces.

Why do you put “like” in quotes?

To differentiate between my enjoyment of a movie from a plot standpoint and my appreciation for it on its film making merits I guess.

I haven’t seen Joker yet so I can’t comment on any specifics, but this sounds like a movie that I might classify as one that I “kinda like” or one that was “just OK”? Why do we have to go into “surely you must acknowledge the superior lighting of the film”? How many moviegoers do you think actually think about the score or the lighting or the editing?

Maybe we just go into movies with a different mindsest but I’m basically just all OK entertain me GO.

Cool, cool. I’m with you on the lighting and editing, but film scores are just laugh tracks for people who went to college. We can only hope that they too will be gone within a decade or two.

Midsommar had some excellent visuals. Mostly this guy’s movies don’t feel ominous or frightening to me so much as vaguely unpleasant and often manipulative. But I’m probably the weirdo here because most everyone else liked them.

I thought BR2049 was underappreciated. It’s a big order to make a completely unnecessary sequel to one of the GOAT sci-fi films, but this movie pulled it off.

I’m almost with you but I thought the entire thing was just vapid.

I think there are some really good movies of late (Inception, Dunkirk, BR2049, La la land, hateful eight otoh) that wouldn’t be anywhere near as good without their scores.

People like John Williams, Hans Zimmer are just super important to filmmaking.

That is an insane take.

Yea I think that’s right. I despise reality TV because I’m rarely watching TV / Film solely to be mindlessly entertained. Was pretty sweet when I got my partner to watch The Leftovers from start to finish a few months ago and didn’t have to go to the other room while she watched Vaderpump Rules and all that kind of trash.
