Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

I’m glad it just isn’t me. I distinctly noticed it. obnoxious visual style

Another documentary about The Villages will be released. This one is by a joint Swiss-Austrian production. So, it might offer a more critical view than Some Kind of Heaven did, which was mostly a shallow film about a few odd people who lived there.

The Keep: Aw man, on paper this movie should have been fucking incredible. 1982 Michael Mann horror B-movie about a demon who kills Nazis with Sir Ian McKellen, Jürgen Prochnow, and Tangerine Dream doing the soundtrack? Sounds great but it just falls apart and it drags, though. Hard pass --I love Michael Mann, but he should not direct horror movies.

OTOH, Near Dark is something else, Kathryn Bigelow’s first movie as a director is a gender-swapped, class-swapped take on the Dracula legend, it’s sexy af, it’s great, it has Bill Paxton and Lance Hendrickson from Aliens.

We finally watched Everything Everywhere All At Once tonight. Jesus Christ - my expectations were very high for this based on posts in this thread and social media reactions etc and this film exceeded them. I can’t remember the last time I was so entertained. In complete awe right now. Hilarious, heart warming, action packed, brutal, imaginative, off the wall brilliance. It really did have EVERYTHING. The performances were fantastic, too.
Gonna be thinking about this one for a while. Will try to rewatch soon.

I’ve never made it through the sequels. Turned off the second during the shaky cam and vowed to never watch a Greengrass movie ever again.

watched Woman King last night. it’s a perfectly great equivalent of 300, superior in many ways. this movie obviously needs to exist, and it’s acted well and entertaining. but the genre seems to be going global, eg RRR, and the trend isn’t enjoyable

Is it “free” with any of the streaming services or only for rent/purchase?

Im only seeing it for rent/buy. I thought it was on HBO Max at one point but is not any longer

Rented it on Vudu. Should have bought it

lol wtf

I feel like R-rated Christmas horror is a gimmick that’s been done to death by now.

Surprised Superbad was only at #31. Obviously 22 years of movies is a lot, so it’s not like that’s terrible (and I haven’t seen all these films), but one could easily make an argument for it being top ten.

Looks more like Christmas Die Hard than Christmas horror.

Also, is that John Leguizamo playing Hans Gruber?

lol, I think they snuck in a lesbian couple in that shot if you watch carefully. Pre-code movies were the nuts.
