Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

They just re-released Avatar back in theatres on Friday. It was the #2 movie on it’s first day of re-release with a $3,325,000 daily gross. Competition though seems really really bad.

I don’t really get the Avatar hate. Seeing it in on release was one of my top 5 movie theater experiences. I rewatched it on a 3d TV a few years later and still loved it. The plot is kinda basic (which is the case of most movies ?) but as an immersive world discovering experience it’s absolutely amazing.

100% yes.

that must depend on who you follow because my feed is basically the opposite, in the last couple days it’s filled with posts making fun of the ones you mention

Man, I guess maybe I’m the dummy here but I didn’t get Avatar at all. I’ll tell you what tho, Saloum is one hell of a movie.

Without looking it up, can you actually name a character in the movie?

Yep. Watched it 3 times in the theatre which is the most I have ever watched a movie in the theatre and loved it every time. Tried watching outside of the theatre on a normal screen and couldnt do it.

Plan on watching this Avatar rerelease in theatres.

Will be interesting to see what happens with Cameron’s next try for 3d in Avatars sequels

JakeSully
Neytiri

will admit I forget after that

except they are after unobtanium

I remember being hyped for the release then didn’t see it until maybe like 2019? And it was fine? Obviously not the theatre experience, but I’m done with 3d movies by now.

I did remember the main characters name when writing that post, nothing beyond that

So Avatar 2 later this year will be the next big trial for 3d. If Avatar 2 is a flop it is going to put 3d back a decade…and the 3d fad only seems to come back around once a decade…

If you like Cowboy Bebop you need to watch Saloum, it’s the same energy. I will not be taking any further questions on this.

Is it on anything besides Crunchy?

I enjoyed bebop when I watched it ~15 years ago, but really have only seen FMA, Death Note, AOT as an adult.

It’s only on Shudder, it is not an anime, it is a live-action movie about Senegalese bounty hunters who crash-land their plane into a mysterious West African resort. It has very big Cowboy Bebop energy. I will not be taking further questions.

PS: you should watch Evangelion as an adult, it has big midlife crisis energy. Also you should rewatch Cowboy Bebop.

I can torrent a movie np, if it was some long running anime I dont think I’d give it the time.

I did watch Evangelion during the pandemic and it was an experience, maybe similar to when I watched Akira? I didnt love it though, but appreciate it.

I was pretty happy with myself when I managed to remember the main guy’s name after 10 mins hard thinking
(in general, I almost never remember character’s names, typically my memory would be by actor name…)
I see your point though, it’s not a movie with memorable lines of dialogue either, it’s purely an amazing sensory experience.

Intrigued to see a recommendation for a French-speaking movie I’ve never heard of in here…I’m also always looking for good <90 mins movies, will try to watch this one soon.

I don’t think the first Avatar sequel will flop. There’s going to be enough people who remember the spectacle of the first one and go see the sequel. The first sequel better be amazing though or the next three sequels could be in trouble.

Also I remember the main characters name and something about unobtainium because that felt like the laziest movie writing ever. It was like they just didn’t bother to change a placeholder name.

Anyone know if Saloum is any good?

I didn’t remember any characters names before seeing it again on Saturday. I remembered the main story and some individual scenes and what-not, but yeah, it was an odd movie in that I definitely enjoyed it when it first came out, but aside from the amazing “experience,” didn’t find it all that memorable. But again, I had fun going back this weekend to see it again.

My wife straight-up didn’t like it, but my kids liked it a lot. My wife asked my daughter (15) if she thought it was too long (2:45), but she said no, she loved simply looking at it and didn’t want to stop.

Did she want to be any of the characters? I realize 15 is a little old for pretend play, but I do feel like the difference between Avatar and other major blockbusters is that while Avatar is cool to see, kids want to BE Luke Skywalker, or Indiana Jones, or Iron Man, or Rei, or Elsa, or whatever.

Chapo did an episode about Avatar if you’re into that sort of thing. It motivated me to watch it again after listening to their perspective and i enjoyed it even more. It’s no T2 or Aliens but I think it’s pretty good and I appreciate James Cameron’s messaging.
