Thanks.

Last few times I went to a Fry’s, it was just sad, though. Empty shelves everywhere. No one around.

Same. The one up here is gigantic and there were just shelves and shelves of nothingness.

Just watched the first 40 minutes or so of Foxcatcher. So slow. Makeup so distracting. Does it get better?

that’s how i felt for the first 2/3rds, cinematography, visuals, etc. were great and i was def into everything.

last 1/3rd was just WEIRD.

I liked this a lot at the time (but yeah steve carell’s nose is distracting). I don’t think the pacing fastens towards the end, just gets creepier and creepier iirc.

So just listened to The Rewatchables on There Will Be Blood
So, 15 years later…which one should have won best picture? Maybe the two best movies of the 2000s still.

  • There Will Be Blood
  • No Country For Old Men

I havent even seen TWBB but NCFOM is one of my favourite movies so I voted that.

I have completed a rewatch of the Mission: Impossible series. Here are the scientifically determined rankings from best to worst.

MI3
Mission Impossible: Fallout
Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Mission Impossible
MI2

I will hear polite discussion on this but please remember these have been scientifically determined and In This House We Believe Science.

Funny that everyone has very different rankings for this !

Having also rewatched them recently, mine would be
4 162 5 3

MI3 as favorite is…unusual. It’s not that bad, but imo is really hurt by the choice of a Greengrass-style shaken camera, which makes all the action sequences impossible to follow. The attack on the bridge for instance, if done well, could have been the best of the series, but as is is just meh. And with all the focus on “but why can’t he lead a normal life”, it seems to completely miss the point of what is appealing in this series.

5 is also mostly boring except for the one minute of Alec Baldwin’s “Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny” speech which is awesome.

(I watched 5 and 3 last, which may also explain why I rank them worse, since there was a bit of fatigue at that point, these movies all sharing more or less the same plot).

That is interesting. I generally hate shakycam and rewatching some of the bridge sequence just now I can see the complaint, but I don’t think it’s hard to follow. Hunt is on the bridge and guys are shooting at him. That’s kind of it. I do think watch order would matter, 4 and 5 are the closest of any of them and I think I just ranked 4 lower because the more tongue-in-cheek tone of it was annoying after MI3, which is more of a straight up action movie that takes itself more seriously than any of the later movies.

I think 1 is a good movie and I can see ranking it higher. I don’t know, I think the later ones are more fun to watch, which is sort of in tension with my complaint that the later ones are too cartoonish. It’s a tightrope to walk.

Edit: Also that “Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny” speech I think is one of the more cringe moments in the entire series and I hated it. If that’s what you think is “what is appealing in the series” then that may illuminate our differences. I like MI3 precisely because it isn’t like that and features Hunt getting totally broken down in its opening sequence.

Wish I would have made it a public poll, not surprised it’s super close.

Haha yeah that’s an irreconcilable difference there for sure. For me a big part of the appeal (and this also goes for TGM and Jack reacher) is the idea of Tom Cruise as a superhuman and the myth around it, so making it explicitly said by a character is always going to make me happy.

MI2 is one of maybe 5 movies lifetime I’ve walked out of the theatre it was so bad.

counterpoint :

a long haired TC throws sunglasses which explode midair in slow motion while 90s guitars start the M:I theme

the climax is also pretty great (yt link here esp. at 2:00 and the final minute (dueling motorcycles !))

It’s weird because I remember when MI:2 came out and everyone seemed to love it. I always thought it sucked.

Yeah but @clovis8 likes artsy fartsy nonsense with feelings and women with speaking lines that aren’t wearing bikinis.

The first mission impossible being outside anyone’s top 3 is insane

1,4,6,5,3,2 for me

I don’t remember enough about any of the movies to rank them. I’m not even sure if I’ve seen them all, but I do remember that Rebecca Ferguson is hot.
