Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Now I have to ask. Have you read the Watchmen?

I hate typing on a phone and am not apt to do this explanation justice but it’s not about any of the characters.

Pretty much every interesting idea any zombie movie has ever had was right there in the original Night of the Living Dead. It’s kind of amazing, you can see all of the tropes.

I guess I should have said source material rather than characters.

I realize this type of criticism is pretty cliche but it’s unique for various reasons in this instance.

The ending they replaced it with makes zero sense.

It makes the film a money grab instead of someone justifying poetic license with a different take on a classic.

Yeah, this pissed me off too. Bad move on Netflix’s part to give this guy a paid role in any of their stuff.

The movie as a whole was a strange mashup of conservative/reactionary and “woke” politics. I’m not sure if the filmmakers thought it was coherent or if it was just their attempt to have something for everyone.

On balance I didn’t think much of the film. Didn’t really hate it but didn’t enjoy it either. Basically fast-forwarded the last 20-something minutes 'cause my eyes were hurting from rolling around so much.

Ugh… I really want to see the new Godzilla but $30 for a streaming movie is crazy. Kaiju movies are a superweakness of mine, I’ll basically enjoy seeing one any time no matter how bad. would probably pay $20 to watch it.

What the fuck. No.

Yeah for a theatrical release I’d actually much prefer to save some money by paying $30 and watching it at home.

Army of the Dead is frustrating because the core idea of Dave Bautista doing a goofy heist in a casino with a zombie tiger is almost can’t-miss material. But it’s bogged down with new zombie lore that never pays off, as well as robot zombies and some kind of time loop thing that’s never explained. I guess the idea is that we’re all supposed to run to the internet and develop fan theories about what’s up with the robots. It’s a lot to expect from those of us who just wanted a fun zombie movie.

In retrospect, “Zach Snyder” and “secret robot zombies” in the same sentence makes total sense. Its like his singular concept he has for filmmaking is “the dumbest thing you can think of … IN SLOW MOTION!”

Slow motion is fine is a dumb action movie. Really, the action scenes are all pretty great? I just didn’t need to learn about all the different new types of zombies and the super Zombie King when none of it pays off.

I didn’t really notice excessive slow motion with this one. The directorial choice that I did notice and found overdone was the thing where only the middle of the frame was in focus and all around the sides of the shot everything was super fuzzy. Like way more than normal depth-of-field stuff. Really distracting.

And I was high af so I just plain missed the robot zombies. Probably for the best actually.

Riders of Justice IMDB

Another Danish movie with Mads leading. Completely not what we were expecting, but pleasantly surprised. It’s very dark humor so this is as much a warning, as a recommendation.

Mortal Kombat (the new one)

Watched this with dlk9s jr tonight. I know it’s gotten very mixed reviews, but we enjoyed it. Look, it’s not going to win any Oscars (well, maybe for VFX, who knows), but it’s a fun, entertaining video game movie. Action sequences were great, especially the ones between people who were clearly skilled at martial arts. Special effects were fantastic. There were a couple things we nitpicked, but whatever. It’s ok to just chill and watch a pretty nicely done, bloody fighting movie based on a famous video game.

Totally setup for a sequel, too.

I know nothing about the comics and what-not, but just from watching this and seeing other teasers, I think seeing people as superheroes who you wouldn’t normally think of for a role like that is cool.

Geeky nerd Kumail Nanjiani becoming Rock-esque jacked does a real number on my brain.

Finally watched Blade Runner 2049. What a great looking film. Really pumped for Dune.

BR2049 was massively underrated.

I’m going to watch Dune in the theater instead of on HBO max, and I might even buy popcorn.

I almost watched Dune (1984) last night with the weed.
