Metallica Tournament

Master of Puppets only real advantage in my book is screaming “MASTER” at a concert. One has a far more intense and unique concept (trapped in a body that remains alive but cannot live in any real sense vs. EHRMEHGEHRD DRERGS), it’s got better instrumental themes and solos, and the structure of the song is much more coherent: One is a slow crescendo of building rage from waking up to realizing the utter torture of what will be his station for the rest of his miserable life, while Master of Puppets is pretty fun thrashing interrupted by some musically pleasing but also somewhat out of place pizzicato that’s more of an intermission than a new direction. Master of Puppets might be some of their best thrashing, and it’s very good thrashing, but One is the better composition as well has having better guitar solos.

Yeah One is a better constructed song, it has direction, it has a build and a payoff, none of it is boring or drags at all.

The fact that One is not an straightforward “heavy metal song” is a positive as far as I’m concerned. Among fans of the band it’s considered very close to the top if not universally the GOAT, but it’s also very well liked by people who are not fans of the band. It transcends genre in a way that is super rare. It’s singular, there isn’t really anything else like it. It’s similar to the position Bohemian Rhapsody inhabits in Queen’s catalog. You might prefer other songs, but that’s Queen’s best song because it’s so one-of-a-kind.

Master of Puppets is just a thrash track. A good one admittedly. Not even my favourite track on the album, I’d much rather never hear MOP again than never hear Orion again.

Finally. It’s time for MOP to lose.

One is IMO the best Metallica song and it’s not that close.

Very well said.

Okay, too far.

Thanks for running the tournament, it was nice to get reacquainted with a lot of songs and to further affirm that post 1990 metallica sucks ;)

LOL I forgot to vote (I think the RGB despair threw me off), sorry! After being almost 100% sure I was going MoP, I started rethinking it and I was going to listen to the album version of One to see if I liked it better than the video version with the cuts from the movie (I now have and I do), so uh, I would have voted One. Tie?

Oh that’s some bullshit there.

So boring to see MoP wipe out the competition aside from One.

You know, Red Green Blue really was one of our best justices

‘Heaviest’ makes me nervous because they sometimes seem overly sensitive about going soft and they think the answer is an album full of heavy chunky blues riffs that are mostly a dime a dozen. But I remain something close to shocked that the last album had songs on it that I think hold up with their best (Halo on Fire, Spit Out the Bone), so I am excite they are still into making new music.
