remember that Hendrix cover a couple days ago - the South American guitarist with his dog? A 12-year-old is capable of reproducing it, but not of originating it imo

that chord voicing and embellishment @ :41 and then the descending passage of play that follows till the idea resolves is singularly Hendrix. Itā€™s so original and thereby foreign to all blues-based rock before or since.

And in a game like guitar, where so much is imitative, thereā€™s no allowance for that in this instance.

I like your style here. Thanks for this. Be proud of that last sentence.

There perhaps can be something more intimate with a singer.

I recently discovered an author, and got choked up hearing him read aloud passages from one of his books before a live audience.

Thanks dude.

I chucked the second heart on there because the drunk typos made me lol

People are overthinking these questions about Art and are confusing two different things.

Artists seek to create and express ideas/feelings about human experience; technicians (artisans) perform the more mundane act of materialising the formerā€™s work.

Musicians who play other peopleā€™s music fall into the latter category (Iā€™m not being derogatory here as both musician parents would agree with this if they were still around).

People who write music fall into the first category, alongside other artists (writers, painters, film makers etc etc) and tend to have similar sensitivities and sensibilities.

This is why someone like Jimmy Page prefers to be described as a composer/producer, not a musician, and Jimi, although he was a musician par excellence, wrote most of his music and therefore both are bona fide artists.

Contrast that with the 12 year old guitarist playing a note-perfect version of a Jimi song, or an accomplished forger of paintings: technicians, both.

A parallel with writing doesnā€™t exist, because an author has no need for a technician to materialise his work.

I donā€™t totally disagree, but given I think John Coltrane playing My Favourite Things is the greatest thing in music I canā€™t totally agree either. Just to take Coltrane and jazz then I donā€™t think you can gloss improvisation as something like instant writing, I think itā€™s rather a kind of performance, and one that clearly points to performance being an artistic activity in and of itself - at least sometimes.

I also love that piece, but a HUGE amount of creation/on the fly composition went into it from Coltrane, marking him as an artist not a technician. Compare that with an orchestra member playing from sheet music according to the conductorā€™s interpretation (the latter along with the composer being artists).

I obviously agree with the work and the effort, I just donā€™t think the split between writer & performer can capture it all. Another jazz example, I doubt Keith Jarrett would say he artistically takes it easy when heā€™s performing Bach or another composer, as opposed to when heā€™s doing jazz standards with his trio.

I think it depends on whether the musician is altering the composerā€™s original intention for the piece, which Iā€™d guess would be as true in Jarret;s case (Iā€™m not that familiar with him) as it would also be in the case of covers significantly different to the originals. Examples weā€™re both familiar with: Jimiā€™s Like A Rolling Stone (live) has musical qualities absent from the original, as does your Melt Banana cover.

Improvisation is not composition. not in this lifetime, not in the next

thatā€™s the result of mastery of oneā€™s instrument, innumerable hours spent doing so, not some super-computer brain solving equations between each note to determine which way forward. And thereby the domain of true musicians. Not someone bestowed with the enigmatic title of ā€˜artistā€™ for reasons deserved or imagined.

that whole post is extremely interesting, and thx for this feedback. Was hoping for a treatise from you, as I find the alternative sensibility relative to music interesting. It provides a real glimpse into an almost caste-type thinking you possess wrt the magic of music. Iā€™ll extrapolate more later, after additional reads.

I really really loved your conversation about music and how it can be construed or seen as art or not.

It was very insightful.

Now who wants to hear a bunch of songs about fucking?

And mud/dirt?

And for some reason really distorted instruments?

Lets do this!

Just really really really not what I was looking for unfortunately. It didnā€™t track or make me want to move much at all. I just wanted it to stop.
