Major League Baseball (Part 2)

Extremely doubtful that they could possibly offer him a deal worth taking when the additional lifetime money he could get from endorsements/etc by being on a serious contender with dynasty potential is so high. Those guys will have competitive offers too.

And that is if all he cares about is money.

He doesnā€™t seem like the most money type to me

The question isnā€™t about what he wants. Itā€™s about what the Angels think, regardless of how accurate their thoughts are.

The owner has explored selling the team and some of the prospective suitors are Japanese, so it might make financial sense to overpay Ohtani if it raises the sale price.

Pitching is idiotic. The best pitcher in baseball hasnā€™t even made 50 starts since the beginning of 2023. Strasburg has nerve damage :harold:. McLanahan, Bieber, ā€¦ I could keep listing top flight horses in the glue factory if I kept looking. Ohtani should just focus on hitting and becoming an elite defensive outfielder.

hitters also can go to straight to the glue factory too, danger is everywhere in sports

Iā€™m almost positive that pitchers are significantly more likely to get both injured and seriously injured than position players. The part Iā€™m less sure about without looking is how ominous a failed TJ surgery is for pitchers facing a second one.

a lot but thereā€™s some that are around in the majors, rasmussen is on his third now.

ryu just came back he has two

his first one was 2004

think heā€™s lost out on the ginormous 600+ mega payday at this point. So opting for a short-termish gig (2 years at 100?) to prove he still can and wants to do both is probably on the table. this keeps the Angels in play bc why not stay where you know. donā€™t subscribe to the idea that theyā€™re more marketable in some markets more than others and these guys donā€™t care as much about winning as weā€™d like to think.

That would be surprising.

When was the last time a pitcher made 50 starts in a partial season?

Back when teams were going with a 2-man rotation.

Thatā€™s why I actually liked the Mets moves this year. Signing highly effective pitchers to short contracts seems like a good route to go if you donā€™t have a young ace in your system or on your team.

Obviously not enough data yet but I wonder if the pitch clock will lead to more injuries

I dunno but meant 2020 just fat fingered it.

Nah. Only takes one team to splurge.

Heā€™ll probably be a Met.

Maybe he wants to live in Canada :)

Dodgers 2 Years $120M or 3 Years $180M. I think he will prioritize winning and being on the west coast, and will learn the Mike Trout/Connor McDavid lesson. And hate them or not, there is no better situation than the Dodgers.

Is he totes not pitching next year or is there a timeline where itā€™s possible?

0% chance.

I donā€™t know what you do with a torn ucl on a guy like Ohtani. Typically you get the TJ and you lose probably 2 years or so. Not always two depending on the timing.

But I assume if you have TJ you arenā€™t swinging a bat. So maybe you can just let the ucl naturally heal while still playing the field? Either way I wouldnā€™t expect him to pitch until 2025 or possibly never again but im probably wrong.
