Major League Baseball (Part 2)

I mean long term. Obviously year to year is no big deal.

I’m a pretty hard core MLB fan. Even I’m losing interest. Especially when I pay $150/yr for MLB.tv and I still miss games because of Prime, Apple TV, Peacock, etc. I get maybe 110 games even though I’m paying a full subscription. I didn’t even sign up last year until the Fathers Day deal they offer. I just don’t see how people in their 20’s and 30’s are gonna keep forking money over.

I’m sure MLB will eventually adjust. :person_shrugging:

How does the dodgers farm system rank?

It’s insane that my Dad couldn’t watch any of the playoff games between the Royals and Yankees in KC because he doesn’t have cable. Reason #79 why the NFL is a much better product right now.

MLB right now is like it’s being run by vulture capitalists squeezing the last drops of blood out of a cherished brand, with zero consideration for long term viability.

Yes this is it in a nutshell.

Teams like the Royals do get a break by being in a division of smaller market teams.

If the solution is that rich guys should stop being greedy, I don’t put a lot of faith in that ever happening.

I’d rather force them to spend money with a salary floor.

these kind of breakdowns are super misleading, does it count the entire $700 million ohtani contract? That’s the thing that drives me crazy about the whole “dodgers spent a billion last off season.” like, they didnt though, it’s a 10 year contract paid over 20 years. of course it’s huge. and I have a feeling in ten years when ohtani’s contract is set to finish, they are going to be feeling the consequences of that for that whole decade. if any other team couldve landed ohtani for $700 mill they would have killed to do so. blue jays were ready to drop down that amount of cash but ohtani wanted to play for the dodgers so here we are

eh, there are still clear tiers of how much money teams have, most don’t have the dodgers level.

on suzzer’s note about game availability it really is absolute dogshit. Over the years Ive just become accustomed to listening on the radio. One of the reasons the dodgers have so much money is they signed a huge multi billion dollar exclusive contract with one single cable company so now no matter how much I am willing to pay, me living basically in los angeles, I cannot watch a game. Even if I wanted to subscribe to that provider it isn’t available in my neighborhood.

Is there anything more American than spending more than everybody else to with a game?

I would say a super violent sport full of underpaid minority athletes (mostly black) that have short and brutal careers while their “owners” reap all of the profit is far more american

I’m a Razorbacks/Cowboys/Spurs/Padres fan. Based on Wemby alone I’m extremely lucky as a fan.

My beef isn’t with the Dodgers as much as spending in sports in general. Whichever league(s) get ahead of killing the golden goose will be the smart ones imo. We seem locked in the idea that nothing can change but tell that to Arthur Blank and the “socialist” measures he employed when they built the Falcons new stadium.

I’d say it’s more Middle Eastern given that it was soccer leagues in Europe that started doing this in ridiculous numbers over a decade ago.

It’s just becoming more egregious now with oldies like Ronaldo signing with a Saudi team for billion dollar contracts.

was going to say, american sports has either a limit of $ you can spend or a penalty/fine of a lot of money if you spend a lot of money

in the world every other league is do whatever the **** you want

I couldn’t either. I had to get Swing TV to have TBS. I was able to use a free trial but if I wasn’t able to do that, I never would have watched. Real smart on MLB’s end to have a match up between the AL MVP and runner up hard to watch.

That’s the completely insane part. They sign these huge contracts and then it isn’t even available to like half the people with cable/fiber. MLB should ban these kinds of contracts. If it’s not available in your area, they should offer it on at least one provider that is available.

But it’s all about whatever puts more money in the owners’ and Scott Boras’s pockets. Fuck the fans. Who needs em?

fyp

He barely has a cell phone. It’s a burner he only turns on when he needs it.

more details on snell deal, saw it reported that about a third of it is deferred and includes a 50 something million signing bonus with no opt outs

people gonna be mad

even more mad…
glasnow/snell were the ace pitchers against the dodgers in the 2020 world series

Yeah but sure, no problems here
