don’t think the O’s have won since my avatard change
on 4th of july.
No freaking baseball for either the Phillies or the Yankees today (also angles and primates). Plus the Mets on the road.
Jfc dudes everyone should have baseball today and especially two of main founding cities. One of them actually had the signing of the Declaration.
Historically, the 4th was a major MLB draw, and teams usually scheduled doubleheaders. About 20 years ago, a lot of teams decided the 4th is a poor attendance date, because people do other stuff now a days. Since then, when it falls on a travel day, you’ll see a short schedule, and the single Canadian team has usually been at home (not this year however). The same dynamic plays out on Memorial and Labor days, which are always on travel days.
The Giants are missing Buster Poseys presence.
Once DeGrom and Scherzer come back, Mets will be full power during the second half. Should be able to pull away from the Braves down the stretch.
It’s still a pretty solid draw here in DC. They always do an mid-morning game so you are out in time for the rest of the 4th. I went once 3-4 years ago and it was packed with huge lines. Even now when they suck, they got a decent bit above their season average yesterday.
Not sure why more teams don’t do similar morning games for the 4th.
This season Peacock network is doing weekly 8:30 (am pdt) games. Previously that was long time only Red Sox on Patriots Day, a mid-April MA holiday and the day they do the Boston Marathon, and as you mentioned, more recently the Nationals.
Sabo the dog and me have been to a couple morning MiLB games. These were a little earlier 10:30 am pdt. It proly isn’t as pronounced in the MLB stadiums, but it definitely feels trippy in the smaller MiLB stadiums.
The reason being is that baseball fields always point eastward. Since games are almost always played in the PM, that means the shadows always run towards the OF. In a morning game, the shadows run towards home, making the whole experience seem subtly backwards.
Another way things are backwards is shade in the stands. All that infrastructure is also oriented towards pm games. Both morning games were at San Bernardino San Manuel Stadium. In the morning, there is -zero- shade in the stands. One of those mornings was very hot. Most of the tiny crowd ended up joining us in the OF lawn section, as there at least were some trees out there.
Of course, in the morning, the sun is in the eyes of the batter, catcher, home plate ump; and the fans in the expensive seats; instead of in the pm, when it is in everyone’s eyes but those folks.
