Every #%!$ing year the same thing.

HEY LET’S TAKE OUT THE BEST PITCHER OF ALL TIME AFTER 77 PITCHES

LET’S NOT LET OUR BEST HITTER HIT AT ALL AND INSTEAD LET’S HAVE KEVIN FUCKING PILLAR BAT LEADOFF

Pillar does really good diving catches and stuff so he should bat leadoff obviously.

TIL Kevin Pillar is still being paid to play baseball. Sorry, man.

I can almost forgive taking out deGrom. Basically every manager is babying the starters in the first game. It sucks, but it’s a league-wide phenomenon. Also, completely results-oriented, but he got away with it. They got through the 7th. The guys who blew it in the 8th were coming in regardless of who pitched the 7th.

I think not PH’ing Dom for Pillar in the 4th when you had the Phillies on the ropes was much much worse.

Considering 2020 was a 60 game season, I have no problems going easy on starters this year. I’d much rather a relief pitcher blow an arm out than my ace.

i don’t know anything about baseball, but i don’t get why they were talking so much about innings pitched. why does it matter how many innings a pitcher pitches? shouldn’t it be # of pitches instead?

It SHOULD be number of pitches per inning. Longer innings put more stress on the arm. A 90-pitch outing over 7 innings is better than 80 pitches over 4.

yeah makes sense. number of innings just seem useless data and they were going on about how many innings each pitcher should pitch.

Yeah people use innings pitched as a proxy for duration of outing. This is obviously illogical but it feels right because we tend to think of a game as “lasting” 9 innings. Innings is a generally weird metric for examining pitcher performance, its outs recorded but divided by three.

And duration of outing is a proxy for how well a starter is throwing.

Good work everyone

What’s frustrating is that in like 2 or 3 months after we’ve hit vaccine saturation, full stadiums may be reasonable again. Meanwhile Michigan is now worse than it’s been at any point and we have high school sports to thank for the latest outbreak.

I don’t know if this is widespread throughout the league, but with deGrom yesterday they (as in, the Mets) were specifically talking about “up-downs” - limiting the number of times he would have to sit down, then go out and pitch again, and that it was decided before the game. So basically the same things as IP. I honestly think he would’ve come out if he had 50 pitches in 6 innings.
