Major League Baseball (Part 1)

I hate Kenny Lofton and even I admit he should be in the Hall.

I’ve done really well working w groups that model and win in bases over the years. They are the smart ones and do the easy part, picking winners. I have the hard part getting outs. This year might be different tho. If u are square and watch 4-5 games a day to start the season, u will make $$ . Simply put, there are gonna be teams and players wayyy ahead and wayyy behind early. This maybe a rare opportunity where the best handicapping is done by actually watching the games.

If u can get down exhibition mlb bury the overs today. Pitching is lagging a bit, runs have been plentiful and any manager that uses the front of his with the season starting the next couple days should be fired. Gl

Why not sell 5k tickets at 50$ a piece w strict seat rules and social distancing in non come stadiums? No concessions, limited rest rooms but who pees at a baseball game w out drinking beer?

250k x 30 = 7.5 million. Pay your fukkking minor leaguers

MikeLikeOrgies,

13/$380 million Jesus, I was going to say the Red Sox are probably annoyed but there’s no way they were going to offer him anywhere near that.

Dodgers are building a dynasty baby

The Dodgers are insane, have unlimited funds and a good farm system with elite prospects. Only the variance inherent in baseball is keeping them from already being a dynasty. Here’s hoping they never actually win.

I have long contended that in the last ~10 years they are playing waaaaay under expectation.

Yeah the Dodgers should have titles for sure, although the title expectation for even dominant teams in MLB isn’t that high.

They were straight up robbed in 2017 with the Astros cheating bullshit, and I say that as a Giants fan.

Yea that’s still a very sensitive subject for me

Their current run is a little reminiscent of 1990s Braves. Well run teams getting varianced out of championships.

Fyp.

OK, for better or worse, there’s going to be MLB 2020. Let’s all hope for the better. Here are our season picks…

2020 MLB me Sabo dog
World Series my Red Sox 4 - Dodgers 3 his Padres 4 - Yankees 0
Season plays as planned LOL no LOL no
“Central League” Favorite my new Cubs his new Reds

Records we could see if the season doesn’t play as planned. The Good

  • Highest winning percentage: 832 ~ 1884 UA St.Louis Maroons (94-19-1) The Union Association is one of four defunct official major leagues. Plenty of historians say only the Maroons, whose owner also ran the league, were of major league caliber. The league folded after this one 1884 season. The Maroons joined the NL in 1885, moved to Indianapolis in 1887, and folded after the 1889 season.

This would be 50-10. The 2001 Mariners started 48-12 (.800). Shortened, the 1984 Tigers started 35-5 (.875); 17-3 (.850) record would also do the trick.

  • Highest winning percentage, modern era (1901+): .763 ~ 1906 NL Chicago Cubs (116-36-2). The 1906 White Sox beat my new Cubs in the World Series 4-2.

  • Highest winning percentage, expansion era (1961+): .716 ~ 2001 Seattle Mariners.(116-46) The 2001 Mariners fell short of the World Series… beating the Indians 3-2, then losing to the Yankees 4-1.

These would be 46-14 & 43-17, both of which the 2001 Mariners (48-12) bettered in their first 60 games. Shortened, 16-4 & 15-5 would do the trick.

  • Least Loses: 5 ~ 1884 UA Milwaukee Brewers (8-5) Six of the 12 teams to play in the UA were replaced in season or were such replacements. These Brewers started existence in the 1884 defunct minor Northwestern League. When that league disbanded, they joined the UA as a replacement (even though the Maroons had already clinched). During their short stretch in the major leagues they had a no-hitter and a then record 18 strikeout game. In 1885 they joined the minor Western League, before going out of existence before the 1886 season.

A shortened 15-5 season would do the trick to tie.

  • Least losses, full season: 14 ~ 1876 Chicago White Stockings (52-14) Team now known as my new Cubs.

As mentioned, the 2001 Mariners lost less (12) in their first 60 games.

The bad…

  • Lowest winning percentage: .111 ~ 1884 Wilmington Quicksteps (2-16). The Quicksteps started their existence winning the minor 1884 Eastern League. Then they joined the UA as a replacement team. Most of their good players jumped to other teams, the Quicksteps then failed themselves, and were in turn also replaced in the UA.

This would be 6-54. Shortened, the 1988 Orioles started 3-25 (.107); 2-18 would also do the trick.

  • Lowest winning percentage, full season: .130 ~ 1899 NL Cleveland Spiders (20-134). In a practice called Syndicate Ownership, the Spiders shared ownership with the St.Louis Browns (now Cardinals). All the good players were concentrated in St. Louis, while the Spiders played only 42 home games (vs 102 on the road). The practice of Syndicate Ownership, and the Spiders franchise itself, were banned the following season.

This would be 7-53. Shortened, the 1988 Orioles started 4-29 (.121), 2-18 would again also do the trick.

  • Lowest winning percentage, modern era (1901+): .235 ~ 1916 Philadelphia A’s (36-117-1) Now Oakland A’s.

  • Lowest winning percentage, expansion era (1961+): .250 ~ 1962 New York Mets (40-120).

These are 14-46 & to tie 15-45. The 1988 Orioles were 15-45 through their first 60 games. Shortened, the 1988 Orioles started 12-42 (.222); 4-16 & to tie 5-15 would also do the trick.

  • Least wins: 2 ~ 1884 UA Wilmington (see above) & 1884 UA St.Paul (see below).

  • Least wins, full season: 9 ~ 1876 NL Cincinnati Reds (9-56) No connected to current Sabo’s new Reds.

This would be 9-51 to tie. Shortened, the 1988 Orioles started 8-34 and 9-38.

The Ugly…

  • Least Games: 9 ~ 1884 UA St.Paul Saints (2-6-1). Like the UA Brewers, the Saints started their existence in the 1884 minor Northwestern League, then finished 1884 in the UA. They are also the only “travelling team” in major league history… as all of their UA games were on the road. The team evaporated with the UA.

  • Least games in standing pool (aka “halves”): 48 ~ 1981 Toronto Blue Jays (21-27 2nd half). Although common in MiLB, MLB has only played split seasons twice: 1892 and 1981. In 1892 each half was a scheduled 77 games. In 1981, because of the players strike, teams played between 48 and 58 games in each half. The only team to play 48 was the Blue Jays in the second half. So… if things go as planned, 2020 won’t have the “shallowest” standings in MLB history.

  • Least games, full season: 57 ~ 1876 NL New York Mutual (21-35-1) The Mutual actually played their home games in Brooklyn, then a separate city. The major innovation of the NL was the fixed schedule. In the debut season, scheduled for 70 games, the Mutual blew off all the games at the end of the their schedule… and were expelled from the league.

  • Least games scheduled: 60 ~ 1877 & 1878 & 2020. In 1877 and 1878 seasons the six teams were scheduled to play each other 12 times.

I wish the NFL Washington’s would use the name Quicksteps

Pennsylvania has said the Blue Jays can not play there either. Apparently they were going to share with the pirates.

Really becomes a problem for baseball if one team can’t play.
