I keep forgetting to post the playlists:
Just when I think OP is hopeless, he redeems himself.
Partially.
Disrespecting SRV is unforgivable.
Don’t forget that I wasn’t only disrespecting SRV but all of Blues. There might be a whiff of redemption but most likely I’ll end up like Kylo Ren.
I am still cramming for the final reveal but I think I’ll be ready to do it today. Give me 60-90 minutes.
Here’s the scores heading into the round.
Suzzer ships it with an Aerosmith cover of a Gordon Lightfoot song or a Gordon Lightfoot cover of an Aerosmith song
Category 7
A song that was a strong second choice for one of the above categories
All the other categories have sent representatives. Judging(*) how well a song fits across six categories is a fool’s errand so I won’t even try. This is supposed to be the shoe-horn category anyway. With few limitations in place we get a broad range of songs.
Despite nominally being second choices the category turned out quite well. In the bottom tier are what I’d consider flawed songs. Those flaws are very subjective though and a reasonable listener might disagree with me and enjoy them much more than I did.
I thought ranking the previous category was hard. This category was a whole new experience. I could justify moving literally every song up or down at least spot. Nailing down the final ranking caused me a few headaches. My podium might be somebody else’s bottom tier.
(*) I might mention how well I think the song fits but it won’t affect the rankings.
The alternate categories that are marked with [???] are my guess when no category was specified.
My own submission is for the voice category: an aria written for the movie Hannibal. I find it very moving and I hope it’s something that someone who doesn’t usually listen to opera can enjoy as well:
In 16th place, scoring 1 point, @Pauwl with Tomorrow’s Gone by Charlie Megira
Alternate category: foreign language
This is another lullaby. It violates cardinal rule no.2: do not bore me. The vocal track is mixed so far into the background it becomes unintelligible.
In 15th place, scoring 2 points, @Lawnmover_Man with Let It Happen by Tame Impala
Alternate category: Road Trip
The middle part violates cardinal rule no.1: do not annoy me. Sure, go ahead, emulate a skipping CD. People love to listen to that. The rest is actually quite good if a tad long. Get rid of the annoying and unneccessary parts and this could have been a tight electronic track.
In 14th place, scoring 3 points, @Jalfrezi with Whispers by Fairground Attraction
Alternate category: Voice
It’s a pleasant enough song and she has a beautiful voice although the high notes in the end are a bit much. I can understand if somebody likes the song but this is not something I’d go out of my way to listen to.
In 13th place, scoring 4 points, @JohnnyTruant with Graceland by Paul Simon
Alternate category: Road Trip
The underlying instrumentals are pretty good and in my opinion are a good foundation for a road trip song. Unfortunately I am not a fan of Paul Simon’s voice or his singing style. With different vocals this could have scored higher.
Tier 2:
In 12th place, scoring 5 points, @NhlNut with Big Log by Robert Plant
Alternate category: Road Trip/Guilty Pleasure
I’ll go with “nothing special” on this one. I could tell you once more that we have great singer here and how nice the guitar sounds. The truth is that this isn’t music I am very much interested in. If there were three songs like this in a row I’d have totally spaced out before they end.
P.S.: My guess is road trip song by process of elimination.
In 11th place, scoring 6 points, @LikeClockwork with Les Fleurs by Minnie Riperton
Alternate category: Voice [???]
Minnie Riperton has a great voice and the background singers as well. They, the horn section and the more energetic finish keeps this from getting boring. Nice.
In 10th place, scoring 7 points, @ microbet with Riders On The Storm by The Doors
Alternate category: Road Trip
On the one hand we get a nice classic rock song, on the other hand it suffers from a bit from the self-indulgence that was in fashion in 70s rock. For example, throwing in a 2 minute keyboard solo into the middle of the song or having a 45 second outro. Some might argue this is what makes the song great. I am of two minds on this.
Tier 3:
In 9th place, scoring 8 points, @NotBruceZ with Shakira by Te Aviso, Te Anuncio (Tango)
Alternate category: Foreign [???]
This is a great pop song. The addition of Latin and rock elements make this a well-rounded fare. If I had less previous exposure to the original English version (which I prefer) it could have scored some more points.
In 8th place, scoring 9 points, @miliboo with Perfume by Los Hermanos Laser
Alternate category: Foreign [???]
At first the Spanish lyrics tricked me into liking this more. They diverted my attention away from the fact that this is a run-on-the-mill rock song. Not bad for what it is but it’s not more than that.
Yeah, voice. Knew I was in trouble when I just logged in and saw I had notifications lol.
Tier 4:
In 7th place, scoring 10 points, @smrk4 with Miri it is while sumer ilast by Ensemble Belladonna
NOT ON SPOTIFY
Alternate category: Foreign
I don’t know what it is about medieval vocal music that makes me like it so much. It could be the choral singing, could be that most of the time it is either very solemn or very merry, could be something else.
The singing is mesmerizing and the fiddles are not only beautiful but necessary. Without them this is likely too dull.
It’s one of the stronger categories.
