Good day for my little corner for the world. The guy is was working for just won the leadership of our provincial NDP party (think a whole party of AOC) by a crushing 86% of the vote. He has a very good chance of toppling the idiot Mrs Trump wannabe who is our current premier (like your governor).

It’s kind of funny that they actually went to school together, and even took the same political science course at the University of Calgary. The CBC article included this kind of funny line:

Of course the conservatives have chosen the English major that spreads phoney baloney libertarian propaganda and not the person who, you know, might actually know something about business (not that I actually have a lot of faith in the median commerce major grad, but Nenshi is not that).

Happy Canada Day! I’m just a small town Canadian lad from Fort Whogivesashit, NWT, who may or may not be running for Liberal leadership. Like many of you I have fond memories of celebrating past Canada Days by drinking a few Laker Lager around our campfire at Goldman Sachs or playing some street hockey in the halls of the Bank of England.

30-60% of the buildings in Jasper National Park burned down last night. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the most beautiful places on earth.
So sad.

I don’t think the town/ city is the UNESCO world heritage site, but rather the whole park. It’s sad to see the nice lodges and restaurants all destroyed, but the huge and beautiful natural national park will be fine.

Get ready for more of these. Its possible Yosemite gets hit sometime soon. The fires here in California are coming earlier, reaching more acres, and burning longer than ever before.
Yup - and years of prioritizing protecting homes and infrastructure over forest management has created great conditions for fires.
We were up in Jasper two years ago and did the Maligne Lake cruise. The forest ranger (or whatever they are called in Canada) talked quite a bit about how the forests were too dense and basically would be impossible to manage if there was a big fire - due to the fact that they had been very aggressive for years putting out the smaller fires rather than risk homes being burned. Combined with worsening conditions due to global warming, she seemed pretty resigned that it was inevitable.
The other big issue is a pine beetle explosion in population which has killed so many trees making them perfect kindling.
Same experience for us last year. We were on an evening wildlife tour and the guides told us how they were overdue for a cleansing fire, and then pointed out all the trees that the pine beetles had killed and how much debris there was on the forest floor and how much bigger the fire would likely be as a result. I really hope they’re ok.
We did Maligne Lake the next day and it was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been.

My idiot premier went on a trumpesque amendment orgy this week making it impossible to have kids mask or to close schools no matter how many corpses pile the halls and she changed like 5 acts to make sure we all know trans people are super duper bad.
