The search for a new leader is going to be funny in a way because in a party full of assholes the leadership race will consist of a whole bunch of assholes putting themselves forward and the base shouting them down and demanding an even bigger asshole than that.
With the benefit of hindsight, Bernier mistimed his power grab. Coming out of the Harper era too many power brokers and even voters just wanted to get back to the good old days of Harper winning every election with his trademark Banality Of Evil approach. Maxime’s “I’m not a Nazi but they make some good points about tyranny” approach is tailor made for the current moment.
We are the US in 2010. This one will be a mini-Bernier. Next one will be full blown or even him.

The cops inaction with these protests has really jaded me. It’s clear I still had this lol idea that we were somewhat better than the states or at least a little less racist. I was clearly so wrong.
Interview after interview with every level of government saying some version of “what can we do” “we respect protest” “safety is all that matters”.
Reports today that plants are shutting down for lack of supplies.
Meanwhile, we are a few months from the government happily arresting actual journalists at Coastal Gaslink protests!
Both protests impact major industry. The only plausible difference is the Gaslink protest was mostly non-white non-racist participants.

Trudeau might actually score a political win here. The vast majority of the people hate the truckers - they are frequently called “like Americans”, which is about the vilest thing that a Canadian can say about someone.
A lot of people are exhausted and fed up with anti vaxxer morons and any politician that actually slaps them down is going to score a lot of political points. Not a single person that supports the Trucker Resistance is going to consider voting for Trudeau anyway, but a lot of people can be swayed to vote for someone who puts these fucking children in their place.
