The amount of press this indigenous burial is getting is making me proud to be Canadian even though we are also responsible for the horrific residential school system.
Hard to see another nation that something like this would be a national story in every paper for days.
Its quite a thing to reconcile the perception of Canadians as meek and polite with evidence of a state sponsored genocide. I dont think Iâll really be proud of Canada until we truly make the welfare of indigenous communities a national priority. Trudeau says the words but thereâs still a lot of action that needs to happen. And action means $$$.
We have a long way to go for sure but the recognition here is a very good first step.
I am a little worried about the method used to find the burials. Ive done GPR and it can be ambiguous. I hope they were conservative in their interpretation and it doesnât end up being a large overestimate or different age groups as the racists will latch into that so fast.
Yes, thatâs true. The current Liberal government budget for 2021 also approximately doubled commitments to indigenous programs, which is certainly good. But given that they still havenât delivered safe drinking water (!) to all indigenous communities its hard to take a victory lap on any of this.
I mean, yeah. You canât commit a genocide without leaving a lot of dead bodies around.
Trudeau needs to do something showy here, like some big push to rebrand Canada Day 2021 as T&R day and make the entire federal government messaging on July 1 about indigenous people. Hes good at surface level BS so this should be a layup for him.
