LOL politics in the rest of the world outside the US, Canada, Europe and China

As a non American I’m strongly in favour of stronger border controls for the US, at least as to all the guns being exported.

According to my friend in Mexico, the elections will be a clean sweep for Morena. Things might get pretty bumpy down there.

Here’s a link to the live election results:

Morena winning states like Nuevo León and Guanajuato is shocking.

Bumpy how? I don’t know anything about Mexican politics.

Here is a good summary.

Thanks, that was useful. I don’t envy her the task!

The number of candidates assassinated in the 2024 election has now reached 37 - one more than during the 2021 midterm election

It’s 2024 and I’m still honoring the great Jewish tradition of being slightly worried when a member of the tribe is the world stage.

Mexico appears to be on track to have more relaxed laws on abortion than the US, if anyone is wondering how cooked the US is.

I thought it already did, it was just difficult for women in small rural communities to assert their right. IIRC, until 12 weeks an abortion is not even classified as an abortion, but rather a “legal termination of pregnancy.” After 12 weeks, regulations regarding abortion set in.

I heard she wore a big crucifix while campaigning. A lot of people have significant concerns about her

Christians being antisemitic while imagining they are defending Judiasm is unfortunately not a rare thing nowadays.

Man. Mexico has been completely fucked by its neighbour.

Massive market for drugs and exporter of cheap guns.

Imagine a history where drugs where legal in the US and guns were not. Mexico would be a very different place.

Having a Latin American and Jewish background it’s not surprising that Yglesias could see the antisemitism in this line of attack.

Translation

Sure, I can help translate the text from Spanish to English.

The tweet by Vicente Fox Quesada says:
“JUDÍA Y EXTRANJERA A LA VEZ.”
“Jewish and foreigner at the same time.”

The text from Lady Stone X says:
“A lo que llega la falsedad de esta señora, no se supone que es judía ?!?! Si es falsa en su religión y preceptos, será falsa para todo.”
“The falsehood of this woman, isn’t she supposed to be Jewish?!? If she is false in her religion and precepts, she will be false in everything.”

The comment by Matthew Yglesias says:
“I love this Vicente Fox tweet that’s just like “don’t vote for Sheinbaum because she’s Jewish.” None of the complexities of various American antisemitism debates.”

You don’t even have to go that far back to when its neighbor invaded and took more than half of it.

Saw some headline that over 30 candidates in elections were assassinated this year in Mexico. Does that mean the cartels are fine with the president or they know not to get involved with that election?

Pretty badass iyam

Sheinbaum completed the work for her PhD thesis between 1991 and 1994 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. While working for the laboratory, she analyzed the use of energy in the Mexican transportation sector, and published studies on the trends in Mexican building energy use.[16][17][18]

In 1995, she joined the faculty at the Institute of Engineering hosted by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).[12] She was a researcher at the Institute of Engineering and is a member of both the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores and the Mexican Academy of Sciences.[19] In 1999, she received the prize of best UNAM young researcher in engineering and technological innovation.[20]

In 2006, Sheinbaum returned to UNAM, after a period in government, publishing articles in scientific journals.[12]

In 2007, she joined the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) at the United Nations in the field of energy and industry, as a contributing co-author on the topic “Mitigation of climate change” for the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report.[21] The group won the Nobel Peace Prize that year.[18] In 2013, she co-authored the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report alongside 11 other experts in the field of industry.

I don’t doubt that a lot of people have concerns though.
