None of them voted for it, some voted “present”. AOC could be getting a bunch of death threats from capitol police. I’ll give her the benefit of doubt.
They were moments from being possibly killed a few months ago. Cut them a break if they might want some extra protection.
I take back what I said. I figured this was very popular and the no votes were symbolic. I guess the Republicans don’t want to fund the police.
I wouldn’t say that this is the case. Its more that if you give people a bunch of levers to pull to solve their problems, and one of those levers is “spend other peoples’ money”, then more often than not that is the lever they will pull.
These Texas legislators are very naïve. Don’t they know that if Congress Dems force through the voting rights legislation they risk being uninvited to the best dinners with the wealthiest lobbyists? We all must make sacrifices for the greater good, but, well, not that much of a sacrifice.
It also seems unreasonable to expect them to be policy robots. They fear for their life. It’s natural they wouldn’t strongly fight something that they hope would give them more protection, even if it objectively might not.
You don’t ask the guy at the corner store, the day after being robbed at gun point, if he supports #defund if you want his reasoned opinion.
Well Ilhan Omar didn’t feel that way, neither did Pressley or Bush
“I am frankly tired of any time where there is a failure in our system of policing, the first response is for us to give them more money,” Omar said in an interview.
Omar, who has been a longtime proponent of policing reform, said she witnessed failures in "police preparedness and procedures and the lack of political will” to stop the rioters on Jan. 6.
“It is not clear to me how the supplemental addresses that,” she said.
But yeah let’s keep making excuses that the others were sooo scared that they voted against the politics they supposedly support. Also I like your example because it makes it seem like they voted on this the day after the capitol riot lol
I guess AOC will now tell defund the police activists “well we can’t do that, don’t you know there was a murder in your town yesterday, the police need more money”
I’ll allow some of the progressive caucus to be human beings too.
If it helps you with excusing their shortfalls then go ahead and do it all you want
Imagine thinking this person is on our side.
Okay since you wanna play dumbass games do you want me to find all the people that voted present or yes and say they are on your side, I’m sure there’s a few republicans.
Also I don’t even know what fucking sides your talking about. Do you think Ilhan Omar and Cori Bush are on opposite sides of AOC politically and on the same side as Sinema? Like wtf are you talking about?
Since your just being a troll and making dumbass arguments, I’ll just bow out of this convo
I have no idea why you are getting so aggressive and worked up. If you think my position is trolling you need to take a step back and realize not every tiny disagreement is tinder for a full on online war.
My position deviates a tiny bit from yours. I agree giving them extra funding is the wrong policy choice. I wish people always did the objectively right thing.
I am simply allowing for a little understanding in the limited case given the specific circumstances of a bunch of women of colour who are a few months from their life being under threat, where their colleagues are still actively supporting their aggressors. I mean AOC is being threatened daily by at least one of her own colleagues. I am guessing she feels unsafe every day at work.
In that case, I am not willing to go hard against someone with a long history of being on the right side 99.9% of the time.
You and I are not at war, my friend. We have a very small disagreement.
P.S. the Simena post has nothing to do with the discussion about the police voting. I was just starting another discussion. I was LOLing at dems as per the thread topic.
You really shouldn’t be comfortable advocating for defunding the police, which by necessity involves telling crime victims and their families that you want to reduce police presence in their community, if you aren’t willing to do the same after you’ve been a victim. This is really bottom rung elected officials stuff. The AOC vote is shameful.
I guess Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, and Ayanna Pressley aren’t getting death threats and fearing for their lives? Or maybe they’re just policy robots and aren’t as emotional as AOC where she would forget that funding wasn’t the reason Jan 6th happened?
And my bad thought the Sinema thing was related to this convo.
But you’re doing everything the centrist/liberal crew said of Bernie supporters. We follow him blindly and cheer on everything he does, it’s a cult of Bernie!!! But here you are trying to shut down mild criticism on a bad vote by the most left politician we have. You have a weird reflex defend most Democrats because they are on our “side” even though I’m not on the side of either of these political parties, this isn’t a sporting event
I am not shutting down disagreement. I disagree with her vote. I’m simply allowing for a little understanding and empathy.
Edit. It’s worth noting that the other members of the progressive caucus don’t have MTG threatening them daily. As the most visible member, I am sure AOC is the target of the vast majority of the hate from the right.
She probably had a brunch date. Oh well.
I don’t think she has even said why she missed which is even more nuts.
Because fuck you thats why.
She clearly gets off on infuriating liberals, note her curtsy dance no vote on the minimum wage while carrying a literal (let them eat) cake and laughing heartily with Mitch McConnell.
She talks less but is probably even more insufferable than Manchin, she fucking co-sponsored a voting bill she will now do absolutely nothing to advance. Also she’s not from West Virginia.
Yeah… Manchin is from WV which means that he produces massive value every time he votes with Democrats on literally anything. Sinema is a totally different. Sinema is from a state where a left of center Dem would probably be safer electorally. Her VORP isn’t as bad as say Feinstein because AZ is not CA, but it’s bottom 5 and for sure well below replacement value.
