There’s a good chance that AOC receives more credible death threats than literally anyone else in the US. Despite that, she took advantage of an offered platform to elevate a crucial message that will absolutely inspire more hate.
Obviously we should be bemoaning the system that limits her to such a contrived platform, but I can’t really get my mind around bemoaning her. I’m certainly not going to pretend that I have the fortitude and commitment to do better.
I wouldn’t give her that much credit. Or really much credit at all. Is she the most hypocritical person ever? No. Socialists shouldn’t be all sack cloths and ashes all the time, they should get to enjoy themselves too every once and a while. Bernie should get to enjoy a small summer vacation home after holding down a 6 figure income for 20 years.
Was it some brave truth to power moment, shaking the rich to their core? Nope, not that either.
A girl got to dress up a bit and gain a bit of visibility. That’s about it.
Kurt Schrader (OR), Scott Peters (CA) & Kathleen Rice (NY)
Schrader’s district includes Salem, and some of Portland’s south suburbs. Peters is in San Diego Country. Rice is in Nassau County, Long Island.
Maybe @MrWookie and @skydiver8 have opinions on the Congressmen near them. I know sky is not in Peters’ district. Not sure where wookie is in Portlandia.
Scott Peters. Really disappointing and could definitely hurt him in 2022 (if his district still exists). He’s a long-time incumbent which will be hard to overcome, but his district is becoming more and more blue as time passes.
Not sure anyone will line up to run against him, but he’ll definitely hear from constituents about this.
While the moderates are flexing their muscles in the House, the drug pricing provisions were already expected to be changed before the final version of the $3.5 trillion package, given that Senate Democratic moderates also have concerns.
Senate Finance Committee Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) is working on his own drug pricing legislation, which is expected to be less far-reaching than H.R. 3, though the details are not yet finalized.
In December 2017, Schrader was one of only six House Democrats to support legislation allowing concealed handgun licensees to carry their weapons in all 50 states.[26]
In February 2021, Schrader was one of two House Democrats to vote against the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. He said he voted against it because he felt there had been “no legislative process.” He previously voted against increasing stimulus check payments to $2,000.[27][28]
In July 2019, Schrader was one of six House Democrats to oppose a bill that would incrementally increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour by 2025. He was one of two Democrats to vote against the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 because of a provision to raise the minimum wage to $15.[29] When this was removed, Schrader voted for the bill.
In August 2021, Schrader joined a group of conservative Democrats, dubbed “The Unbreakable Nine”, who threatened to derail the Biden administration’s $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation package meant to tackle the nation’s infrastructure.[30][31]
My only curiosity left is whether the progressives actually stick to their guns and kill the bipartisan bill when they get pressed with 'well we tried, nothing else passed, now we HAVE to pass this or else you gave the House to the Republicans"
Cant see anything meaningfully passing this Congress on basically any front.
