LOL Democrats - Tik Tok on the clock, but the party don't stop

Would you have felt the same had she not worn that dress and just gone?

Itā€™s not wrong to engage in performative activism. Itā€™s wrong if thatā€™s all you do.

Nobody here can understand the inherent contradictions in writing ā€œtax the richā€ on a designer dress to a gala that is only open to the most elite members of society?

If she were handing out mesh masks and personal size tubes of Ivermectin that said ā€œtrust the scienceā€, would yaā€™ll be talking about her spreading a good message and ignoring the medium?

We know enough about the Ivermectin people to know they donā€™t really trust science. We know enough about AOC to know she really wants to increase taxes on the rich.

Context matters.

Can people who are criticizing AOC for this state what she should have done instead?

Iā€™m approaching this with an open mind here.

I guess she could have declined the invitation and protested outside with a big Tax The Rich sign. That would have been more ā€œpureā€, but we should all have come to terms with the futility of escalating purity tests.

Personally I think going into the gala and rubbing the Tax The Rich message in the face of the rich people has a nice trolling aspect to it.

Whoā€™s really doing the performative shit here?

I know enough about AOC that I think she trusts the science on Covid too. But Iā€™d still think it was stupid if she promoted her pro-science messages using a medium that is explicitly anti-science.

I wouldnā€™t care at all if she just went to the met gala. Like, Iā€™d maybe think itā€™s kind of silly, but whatever.

I donā€™t really care about this either tbh, but to the extent that I have an opinion, itā€™s that it is a stupid way to send that message. Like, thereā€™s scholarly writings on the idea of anti capitalist messages being co-opted into capitalist branding. This is just a super easy example of that phenomenon.

Not really, tbh.

That doesnā€™t sound right at all to me. Do you think her dress was somehow a celebration of capitalism or an attempt to market products?

She was trolling them, not advertising for them.

To me it looks like she is using her status as a gala invitee to make a point. Itā€™s not like she isnā€™t aware of the irony here. Meanwhile her attackers are engaging in this:

I dunno. This just feels very ā€œoh you hate capitalism but own an iPhoneā€¦ Interestingā€

She wanted to attend an event she had interest in. She made a political statement at the event which was antithetical to the event itself. I certainly donā€™t think Victor is hypocritical for watching college football and the main beneficiaries of that are some of the greediest fuckheads alive.

Classic Democrats. Fully animated circular firing squad over this stupid shit, hey folks the Supreme Court ended abortions like a week and a half ago and no democrats are doing a fucking thing about it, but sure get mad at, uh, AOC. JFC weā€™re gonna lose until I die and deserve it

Its more than that, the irony is the point. Similar to this guy going to antivax ā€œprotestsā€:

Like today Bob Menendez (D-NJ, whose best friend and top donor scammed Medicare out of like $50 million) is holding a hearing ripping Biden for leaving Afghanistan. This is how Democrats are using their power. Direct your rage at that.

What should AOC be doing about the Supreme Court?

Damn AOC hasnā€™t elevated herself to the SCOTUS yet.

Yes and yes? Obviously itā€™s an attempt to market this dressmaker. As pointed out earlier ITT AOC gets to go to this for free with a free dress from the designer. Of course itā€™s for marketing purposes, and the entire event is held specifically for that purpose. I donā€™t know how you can describe it as anything but a celebration of capitalism.

The event itself is nominally a fundraiser for a room in the museum that holds fancy dresses. And they raise a whole lot of money for those dresses at $30k/ticket to the gala.

Iā€™m separating her choice to attend the event and her choice to wear that dress. The event is clearly a celebration of the rich, Iā€™m asking you if her choice to put Tax The Rich on her dress was an attempt to co-opt anti capitalism messaging and use it in service to capitalist interests. Because it really, really obviously was not and you guys are twisting yourselves in knots trying to invent a rationale for taking AOC down a few pegs. Its transparently stupid, sorry not sorry.
