Let's fight about artists with one clear *best* song

hmm…

Roxy Music - Love is the drug (best) More Than This (iconic)

side note: Roxy Music never had a big hit in the US (More Than This reached, like 100th on the charts here), but they were so influential that they got voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame anyway.

Not Sweet Home Alabama?

If I wasn’t on my phone I’d paste a gif of the black blues dudes from weird science - when he asks “on the telephone?”

Avalon for me for Roxy Music

New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle

speaking of…

Oingo Boingo - We Close Our Eyes (best) Dead Man’s Party (iconic)

Fugazi - Waiting Room

I got Fairies Wear Boots for Sabbath and Flying High Again for Ozzy. But both bands are really impossible as there are too many songs in the same class, like a dozen for both.

My favorite Clash song is Lost in the Supermarket because it’s so weird

Stevie Wonder has so many good songs but the iconic one is probably Isn’t She Lovely - which I hate.

What about Take On Me by A-Ha.

LOL it totally is. And catchy.

I keep thinking of more.

Here’s one that might start arguments:

The Cure - A Forest (best) Love Song (iconic, though the same could be said for Just Like Heaven)

also
The Cult - Rain (best) She Sells Sanctuary (iconic)

Green Day

Iconic - Longview

Best - Jesus of Suburbia

Oh yeah gym is now playing I Wanna Rock and Roll All Nite - which is clear kiss most iconic

Ah shit, I thought you meant this Simple Man

I think if the title was “most iconic” instead of “one clear best song” this would be easier. Like definitely Freebird for Skynard, Stairway to Heaven for Zep, Smoke on the Water for Purple, but in no cases are those songs those bands best.

That’s a tough one. Obviously “Genie” was what put Christina on the map, but is it culturally recognized as her best song? I’d argue “Beautiful” did far more to propel her from one-hit wonder status to enduring pop phenom.

This is a stretch, I don’t know much Phish, but always liked the Farmhouse chorus. On this one, feel free to school me.
