Let's fight about artists with one clear *best* song

I’ve never seen American Graffiti, have you?

Yes it’s is best film but is ok at best.

It’s not apples to apples, but it would be like if Whitney Houston’s biggest single was the Star Spangled Banner before the Super Bowl.

It getting all the added Christmas bump changes the dynamic. Like Elton John’s cover of basically his same song when Princess Diana died.

It wasn’t on her #1’s cd.

On her 28 song greatest hits cd it’s on disc 2 as the last song and is the only song on the entire album that’s remixed (with Jermaine Dupri and Lil Bow Wow).

It is a bonus track on the version released in Japan, where the song is admittedly huge.

This is so on brand.

Jimi Hendrix

Iconic: Purple Haze don’t think there will be much argument here
Best: All Along The Watchtower don’t think there will be much argument here either, even thought it’s a cover
Personal favorite: Little Wing

My favorite is A Clockwork Orange.

Kubrick and Scorcese fall into the Pink Floyd or REM category imo - too tough.

Gun to my head - my favorites would be Clockwork Orange and Goodfells (hot takes I know!)

Other musicians with one clear best song

Natalie Merchant - “Wonder”
Chicago - “25 or 6 to 4”
CSNY - “Ohio”
Stevie Ray Vaughan - “Pride and Joy”
The Animals - “House of the Rising Sun”
Sade - “Smooth Operator”

CSNY and Stevie Ray both had several songs in the same class as those listed. I think you would find lots of disagreement about their best.

I hate Chicago but I think If You Leave Me Know is their best.

CSNY I go with Suite: Judy Blue Eyes

Seems to have a lot more staying power.

Wrong for three reasons.

  1. You Wear It Well was a really great single too
  2. some of the songs with Jeff Beck were also very good
  3. “its late September and you really should be back at school”

Fuck me you guys are terrible.

Killer Queen was an ace slab of glam rock.

I’m assuming you mean 97X (the future of rock and roll) and you looked forward to every Memorial Day weekend for the Modern Rock 500.

Just no.

Virginia Plain is best, followed by the whole of the first side of the first album, and Do The Strand.

yes, i do indeed. And I did. And I never understood just how lucky I was to have that station until much, much later. I assume you are either from that area or are a Miami grad. Small world

oof, how did I even forget about Virginia Plain? I amend my post…you’re absolutely right.

This post is way ahead of all other Clovis posts.

I’ll risk my own nominations now.

The Yardbirds - Shapes Of Things

Bob Marley - Stir It Up
