LC Thread 2020: What the PUNK? ROCK.

No excuse for not going out in this weather.

Went for my first jog in a long time. Was nice to be able to legally go outside without wearing a mask for the first time in months. Wearing a mask outdoors is such a depressing experience.

Also, I’m in terrible shape. I’m sure to have gained at least 10 pounds since mid-March.

EDIT: Make that 7 pounds. Gonna go back to vegetarianism once I’m out of the food I have now.

Prague subreddit is such a weird place. They posted a report showing that Czechs had the most negative attitude towards EU migrant workers. People who post there, many of whom are expats and migrant workers like myself, then defended the Czechs against that accusation. Even when someone posted a study by the European Commission that confirmed the bigotry of the Czechs, they still went to bat for them.

I swear it’s like that entire board has Stockholm Syndrome. I mean if you’re white and work in a white-collar field then for the most part the worst that happens to you is that you’re ignored. There were two instances where I faced anything beyond that and quite frankly one was likely just the default behavior of a miserable person.

Of course if you’re Muslim or a refugee from the Middle East, all bets are off. A guy who ran a major mosque in the CR was arrested and sentenced to 11 years for funneling money to Muslim who wanted to join a terrorist group in Syria. Won’t do much to stem Islamophobia.

Also, travellers are leaving the UK for the CR. People here are afraid they’re going to bring in diseases to the country. Apparently there are tons of them. That story should sound awfully familiar to Americans. But hey they are creating temporary housing for them on the border.

There’s also been a large raise in anti-Russian sentiment since a statue of a Russian general was torn down in Prague.

What’s weird about this country is that racism isn’t something that is specific to one political alignment. I’ve had conversations with left-leaning people who seem overall pretty disdainful of the right suddenly drop islamophobic comments in casual conversation in such a way that they aren’t even aware that it’s islamophobic. It’s not like America where it’s “I’m not a racist but…”. It’s just dropped without warning.

The recent episode of Sam Harris podcast is one of the most interesting I’ve heard in a long time. It’s all about how meritocracy creates inequality.

The guy interviewed wrote a very interesting Op Ed last month I didn’t hear anything about. He proposes a one time 5% tax on the wealthiest 5% to pay for covid. The idea seems so obvious how is it not getting more play.

What do you keep your home thermostat set on?

I’ve got the smart thermostat so it’s 83 while I’m at work and it kicks down to 77 at 3:30 pm so by the time we roll in at 5:45 or so the temp is about right the rest of the night. But I’ve been seeing this new girl and I stayed over at her place last Saturday and she keeps hers on 77 at all times and I was hot as balls the entire time. I guess maybe my place is insulated better? But her house is much newer and nicer than mine so I really tend to doubt that. The thermostat just seems unsolvable to me.

My power bill would be seven grand a month if I tried that

No heat. No A/C.

But what do you set your thermostat to?

When I lived in hot places with central AC I kept things about where you do. It’s a totally different ballgame now that I’m back in a temperate climate. I keep the bedroom 68° at night on the couple dozen nights I can’t get it that low with a fan, and rarely bother cooling the rest of the house except on the hottest days.

The older I get the more I need to be cool to sleep well. I did years in central TX with no AC, but I really don’t think I could tolerate it now.

77 is quite high for an inside the house temp. Maybe if you’ve got some fans running it would be more tolerable.

We’re normally between 67-72.

Here’s a picture of our thermostat.

We set it to open in the spring and set it to closed in the late fall.

Not in a hot climate it isn’t. These things are relative.

That’s basically what we do. Except it’s maybe like 1 dozen nights roughly.

I lived basically on the equator for a good bit of my life. Also lived in Texas for a long time. I’m well aware of the relativity of these things. Still, I’d find 77 uncomfortable (without fans).

I suppose if that’s the best I could get, I’d probably get acclimated after a while, but that seems like a different question than what was asked.

77? Good God. Hopefully that’s Kelvin and not Fahrenheit.

Blue numbers are AC, red are heat. Used to keep it hotter or colder during the day depending on the season but the wife works from home now so it doesn’t change at all until night

eyebooger right here, 77 i wouldn’t be able to be present in the house really. 70-72 is the sweet spot wtf man
