So you do or don’t think John McEnroe was punk rock?
I ceded to your knowledge on punk rock. Please do not lecture me on hip hop. I didnt say they were the exact same thing in every fucking way.
You don’t get to play the “I was there” card on punk rock and then start waxing on hip hop. Brits have zero say in the matter. We have jazz and hip hop. Step the fuck off.
In fact here’s something for your American hating ass:
I was talking about the music with Trolly.
I like McEnroe a lot. He’s an astute and intelligent commentator with a good outlook.
You could read England’s Dreaming by Jon Savage (skip the diary parts which are boring and, I suspect, inauthentic) or Lipstick Traces by Greil Marcus which would make the Dadaism comparisons much clearer (tl;dr jalfrezi is absolutely spot on correct).
How would a band like the Dead Kennedys not meet the criteria? Or even pre Rollins Black Flag?
Both examples of what Trolly was saying but I guess they aren’t British so they don’t provide an opportunity for elitist rhetoric.
Well raise my rent. Literally.
Remember when people gave a shit about artists “selling out?” That was fucking exhausting.
You must have missed the part where I said as much.
I’m not gonna hate too much on using music history as a way to flex your intelligence but there’s a point where it jumps the shark.
I’m surprised nobody jumped in with the predictable “hip hop comes from Jamaica” take. Most of the time these same heads are not thoroughly informed on the matter.
Well I was in the middle of replying but if you just want to get angry at imaginary stuff, have at it, lol.
Punk rock and dada? Punk still used song forms.
popkern
Whos angry? Don’t be over sensitive.
Bob Dylan invented punk and rap.
I kid…
Hip hop was originally literally broken down music called breaks with lyrics over it.
Kool Herc was only playing the breaks really. What made the b-boys dance.
I don’t know about punk but hip hop and disco beginnings are shrouded in mystery. Herc earned the title of creator because what he was doing was methodical and employed the idea of “best part of a song.” Of course the academia is strengthened by assigning credit.
There were definitely disco djs before him doing things that hip hop djs did.
Of course, then came Bambaata. He was mixing breaks but he also had international records that nobody had or knew. He would remove the labels and place labels of other records in place lol. He was playing MLK speeches over tunes which was light years ahead of its time. He was really the godfather with James Brown being the great godfather.
I think this was around the time that the sound battles really got crazy. Dudes wiring up speakers by opening up street lights and sometimes getting electrocuted. The sound battles were obviously a Jamaican tradition as was mcing and djing but I still think the way it came together here makes it American. Especially when you factor in that djs in Jamaica (the mcs) were in a mutual relationship of influence with hucksters pimping wares on American radio.
Probably rambling now but man yall got me fired up and ready to get back into some academic reading.
A music professor of mine who critics don’t call dada because he uses form still. He’s had some sound installations at museums and stuff. One of my favorite teachers of all time.
I will absolutely die on the hill that her most recent album is legitimately fantastic. It is the only album of the last 20 years I immediately wanted to re-listen to at least 5 of the songs.
it’s very lana del rey-ish
Her best album yet for sure, and hopefully the direction from now on. Not sick of it yet which is saying something. It was definitely the soundtrack of the summer of 2020 for me.
The Go-Gos are the most successful and influential punk band of all time. #fightme
