BUT one op ed writer said otherwise! Despite there being literally thousands of pieces written on how it empowered the black community, this one op Ed overrides all of the other tidal wave of opinions from the other side!
Jalfrezi, are you actually ignorant enough to think the African population at large actually disliked the movie black panther and its premise/politics? Do you actually believe that is the majority opinion, and you want to discuss this on the day Chadwick Boseman died?
At the expense of perpetuating negative stereotypes about Africa.
If you think that doesn’t matter as long as consumers like you are provided with tons of cheap thrills I don’t know what else to say to you, other than question your politics.
Why do you keep posting about this like it is a fact?
You’re being condescending about a very, very minor view.
You can be condescending to my pop culture tastes because I listened to a Joanna Newsom album and a Linkin Park album yesterday, watched Batman Begins and a Kubrick film, but you’re being an asshole to skydiver for no reason. Dude, there’s no need for this. You’re making it personal that they like a movie that grossed over a billion dollars, was critically lauded and nominated for Best Picture.
I do trust the opinions of family members with degrees in African History more than a bunch of people who just want to be entertained with no thought given to subtext and how Africa and its people are represented.
You think there was no discussion on how Africa was represented when Black Panther came out? You just missed the entire discussion because you pretend these movies don’t exist. Thats fine, but you’re being condescending about something you genuinely have no clue about. You are then taking the opinion of one person, who has a view at odds with the vast majority of people because it fits your narratives about this genre.
You do understand that not everything is made with some deep political subtext or academically-rigorous meaning, right?
Sometimes, I read gasp pulp mystery novels with romance elements that demonstrate antiquated gender roles and ideas on love. But I DON’T CARE. Because I know they are written to be fluff and not serious and that’s exactly WHY I read them.
Oh no my Lisa Jackson novel assumes that women are weak and need a man to be fulfilled! Better go write a 5000 word medium article complaining about it!
Yeah, I think I probably understand this at least as well as you do, thanks.
The question is whether you and people like you (ie supposed lefites) apply different standards when black Americans and Africans are portrayed in negative stereotypes.
Mass delusion/FOMO. I refuse to believe sentient 40-year-olds would be entertained by the exact same plot every movie, and a bunch of fancy explosions, w/o the social aspect.
Edit: Goddam I posted this before I realized so many others itt don’t like them either. I thought I was the only one. Sometimes I definitely feel that way around friends and coworkers.
FWIW I read Chronicles of Narnia 3x as a kid. And the Avengers were my main comic. Both leave me flat as an adult.
I did enjoy Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy though - probably because they make fun of the genre. And the Dark Knight was some kind of high art.
Holy shit man. You are way over the line. Look comic book moves suck. We agree. But your attack line here is way off base given the available evidence.
Haha you’re calling me racist because I’m defending a genre? Note that I haven’t mentioned Black Panther specifically because this is more than just one film.
Like aofrantic said, this discussion was had when the movie came out. Did you watch that video of black people thanking him for making the movie? Or are late night shows too lowbrow for you? Do you really think the people who felt represented care about what we’re talking about?
What negative stereotypes? I don’t think the article youre drawing from is a very good critique of the film. The author is upset that despite Wakanda having technological advances surpassing that of current Western nations, their politics are “regressive” in that they have a Royal family and combat for leadership. So, we’re mad that Black Panther doesn’t have a parliamentary style democracy? It seems he wants the advancements to mirror Western nations, not Africa.
A major plot point in the movie is the struggle the main character has in bringing his people into the world and 21st century or keeping his country “safe” and hidden but behind the times in other aspects due to this decision!
Your personal attacks on people who enjoyed a movie nominated for best picture, countless other Oscars and made over a billion dollars is bizarre.
Suzzer, Law and Order is in like season 40. The Simpsons is still going. People love familiarity.
Lots of superhero movies suck! The recent fantastic four movie is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Almost every DC movie sucks!
