LC Thread 2020: What the PUNK? ROCK.

The point is the decade where you could fall out of bed and land in a manufacturing job is never coming back. That is why MAGA is so lolol to me. It was an unsustainable capitalist gold rush with a couple decade lifespan tops.

That’s kind of a labor gold rush. You now produce more things with fewer people, which is more of a capitalist gold rush. Also unsustainable because capitalists need consumers and commodification kills margins.

The gutting of the rust belt and the mid-west wasn’t something that accidentally happened, it was on purpose. It isn’t just one area dealing with this, it’s systemic. Understanding that is essential to finding viable routes forward.

If we run our country on capitalist software, well we’re going to end up with some really fucked up results. Because profits>people is a toxic line of code to run on repeat.

I’m not sure we’re on the same page here. I’m saying the gold rush was from having little competition after WW2 allowing capital owners to open factories basically on a whim and mine gold out of the world economy. Many (most?) manufacturing boom companies were inefficient by today’s standards and simply fishing from an easy lake. They were always getting bounced once the world economy returned to full strength but it’s what the MAGA people are saying they want to go back to.

I’m gonna run on a Make Poker Legal Again ticket where I promise to bring back 2005 Pokerstars, stock it full of American and Western European whales, and ban the shark-infested Eastern Bloc countries. We’re bringing back the old Supernova Elite program thank you very much.

Can you imagine if they suddenly made online poker legal in the USA tomorrow and pokerstars ran a big ad campaign. Good God even I would sign back up to get a shot at the games.

Stars was always tight and boring. Now if you bring back pacific poker with their $17 avg pots in the .25c rooms. Ill vote for ya. Crazy mofo’s would go all in for hours with full buyins. Had to be dumping or laundering…

Pacific was such a good place to play at both cash and tournaments. I really miss it.

US share of global wealth hasn’t changed that much since this post-ww2 edge. Here’s “output”, but wealth in the US and US based corporations has been about 30% of the world for a while now.

Wizard from Taxi Driver knew that

Would a custom t-shirt saying “this country stinks” be enough to identify maga people?

I think I worked with the guy on the left in 1997. I told my boss that either he’s gone or I am and three weeks later two of the bosses came to the shop and fired him in a most humiliating manner. I almost felt bad for him. Could quite get all the way there tho.

Yeah it and Poker Room were my starter sites and they were both great places to play.

a deeply researched exposé that showed how mass evictions after the 2008 economic crash were less a consequence than a cause of poverty

The New Yorker published a lengthy excerpt of the book. Well worth a read:
