LC Thread 2020: What the PUNK? ROCK.

The Pats fan forum I follow (Blinded By The Lombardi’s) is very liberal, and posters who post anything racist or sexist are challenged immediately.

I’ve looked and most team sites don’t allow politics.

The SEC college football message boards are…exactly what you would expect.

Rush Limbaugh used to work for the Royals. So I doubt the Chiefs would think the CP DC forum is anything out of the ordinary, if they ever even waded into it. I know I regret the day I discovered it, which was years after I joined the site.

Chiefsplanet is one of a few Chiefs forum sites. Arrowhead Pride might be more popular - but only has game and specific article threads. It doesn’t seem to have a “hang out” section. Probably smart in their part.

The first Chiefs forum I found I think is defunct now. Those people were complete idiots - like the kind who throw a fit when the Chiefs don’t spend huge money on a RB free-agent. At least chiefsplanet main forum (which again is a lot more sane and smacks down the DC BS all the time when it wades into the main forum) is pretty football-smart.

CP owner is a big deplorable like Mason.

is the forum endorsed or operated by the chiefs or just a random fan forum?

Random fan forum. Nobody official or even the Chiefs beat writers or pundits with podcasts ever wade in there. Only Jason Whitlock. He seems to like controversy. Paul Rudd and Eric Stonestreet and the rest of our little band of Chiefs-endorsed celebrities, and the Chiefs pundits, all seem to have hung out Arrowhead Pride.

CP was the forum that put in money to fly a “Save our Chiefs” banner over the stadium, which actually seems to have led to Clark Hunt paying attention and getting rid of Pioli.

Lovecraft and Howard, man. Much to answer for.

FWIW I do think the Karen meme is giving voice to a lot of latent misogyny but cooooome the fuck on.

God is pissed

I think that “Karen” does have a little bit of a racial connotation. An undertone. The difference between that and the hypothetical is that it’s hard to imagine it being an undertone with “Laquisha.”

In the first case the primary meaning is around a woman who is overly privileged. Most Americans are going to visualize a white woman as the archetype. So the name captures something about racial hierarchies. Ironically, if it’s racist it’s racist in the sense that it exposes our tendency to associate privilege and higher status with white people.

In the second case, and probably not even for separate reasons, pretty much the only time someone attaches a name like Laquisha to an idealized type is when race is really prominent. “Karen” can involve an archetype where race is understated but present, “Laquisha” probably can’t, at least not in our current culture. The difference does matter. So as usual they’re not wrong that people would react differently, they’re just wrong in thinking there isn’t any reason for it besides hypocrisy.

(Also you’re probably right about the misogyny, and I don’t love the whole “Karen” thing anyway)

I am not at all surprised that Chief’sPlanet harbors racists. It’s borderline racist to even support a team with that name, so there has got to be some selection bias there.

What I reject is not the racialised aspect — Karens are unquestionably predominantly white and everyone pictures a white woman — but the notion that because of that, it’s racist. This is no different than the “‘gammon’ is racist” patter that was au courant in the UK a couple of years ago (I think we even discussed it). ‘Referring to race’ and ‘racist’ are not the same thing. You’re probably right that it normalises a racialised hierarchy of power and privilege, but that’s both very abstracted and kind of true, so I’m not inclined to pay it much attention.

The difference is that the Karen meme is not really about race, at all. It’s fundamentally about power. The ability to behave like an entitled jackass without consequence.

Shouldn’t it be a man’s name then?

I think people already use Chad for this purpose?

I thought Chad was just a dude who gets laid a lot. I don’t even think it’s an insult to be called a Chad. Could be wrong though.

Ah nevermind, it’s only for young white males

A better name for “entitled jackass” who never faces any consequence would be…

Brett.
