I admit I donāt know anything much about contemporary Irish politics, but I found this story just completely baffling. Do you know what was going on? I assume the explanation above isnāt correct, and it wasnāt about reaching out to people in the North. So that presumably means there is some constituency in the Irish state itself that would have supported the commemoration for its own reasons. Is that true? Who is it?

Watching the pathetic coverage on BBC News channel youād have thought they brought down the monarchy ā¦which isnāt a bad idea in itself.

Itās hard to know who the constituency is exactly but the RIC was basically made up almost entirely of Irishmen. Itās been brushed under the carpet for decades as a sort of national embarrassment but far more Irishmen fought in a British uniform than ever fought for Irish independence. In recent years, some of their descendants have been pushing for various commemorations. It started with remembering the Irishmen who fought and died in WWI and has now moved on with this latest debacle to commemorating the RIC.
