Land of Hope & Glory? - UK Politics and other stuff

I was pretty pessimistic but this is waaaaaaaaaaay worse than I could have ever imagined.

We are so, so fucked.

Johnsonā€™s dad on c4 is ā€¦ something

Damn I feel terrible for the people in the UK.

Iā€™m also just super bummed out that this is the trajectory our world is taking. Is it similar in the UK where all the people voting conservative are boomers and selfish entitled shitheads? Is racism a huge part of it?

Boris Johnson offered Stephen Miller writing tips. Yikes.

Im sorry to say thisā€¦ but after watching this complete disaster unfold I think itā€™s pretty obvious that running as a pure leftist against corporate media (which we absolutely have in the us as well) is suicide.

I really donā€™t like this conclusion obviously but I also donā€™t want to get completely rolled in 2020 so that Bernie can be ideologically pure and right.

Unfortunately Iā€™m also now rooting for a no deal brexit that causes maximum damageā€¦ because apparently ā€˜get Brexit doneā€™ was an all time GOAT campaign slogan, which means the only cure for this mess is really obvious easily attributable suffering.

What the British left was thinking of running a pro leave leftist vs Boris Iā€™ll never know, but I donā€™t want to hear any more defenses of Corbyn going forward. If he didnā€™t want to act like a politician he shouldnā€™t have entered politics.

Iā€™m not British but Iā€™d put the factors behind the defeat as something like this:

  1. Corbyn is unpopular
  2. People were sick to death of Brexit and wanted it over with (the Tory slogan was ā€œGet Brexit Doneā€)
  3. Labourā€™s pseudo-socialist agenda is unpopular

My impression is that itā€™s unclear how much of a factor 3) is here. The whole anti-semitism thing is a demonstration of my theorem that the content of scandals is far less relevant than how much voters want them to matter. The emails thing was a weak-ass scandal but voters didnā€™t like Clinton, so it was enthusiastically adopted as a stick to beat her with. Same thing with Corbyn and anti-semitism. You can blame the media but the media were unable to bring down either Obama or Trump with scandals, the former because of general popularity and charisma and the latter because his base were ride or die. The success of the mediaā€™s campaign against Corbyn is largely a sign of the publicā€™s dislike of him and his weakness among even Labour-leaning voters.

Obama scandals were a lot fucking dumber than the trump onesā€“HE WEARS A TAN SUIT, HE LIKES THE FANCY MUSTARD, etc.

Iā€™m talking about the campaign scandals - his association with a former member of the Weather Underground, ā€œGod Damn Americaā€, ā€œcling to guns or religionā€, etc. Those were scandals that could easily have brought down a lesser candidate, particularly a black one.

And while Obama survived, the GOP did clean up in midterms under him. Itā€™s a really tough time to make sweeping statements. Not much makes sense in the last decade in a bigger context.

It kinda does, weā€™ve always put one party in charge, then gotten tired of them and put the other one in charge, then do it again over 2 or 3 presidential elections or so. Oh, youā€™re thinking in terms of actual shit they did or did not do, yeah well thatā€™s people they never make fucking sense.

looks like Jo Swinson lost

Corbyn will step down as labour leader obviously.

I just mean tying British politics to American etc. It hasnā€™t really worked when trying to compare Trump to Le Pen or Boris or Scheer or whatever.

eh, I dunno man, politics seem global nowadays.

80.3% turnout in her district

well, it was projected conservatives would get more seats than they are now. yeah I got nothing, 5 years of conservative majority everywhere, gl UK.

the biggest takeaway from them is fear sells; it sells hard in politics and itā€™s gonna be tough to combat it.

Passport is different from citizenship though

Citizenship comes first then you apply for the passport.

Honestly, the wait was because of America, not the Irish government. Even during the Obama administration, the State Department wasnā€™t all that organized. Can hardly imagine what itā€™s like now.
