Land of Hope & Glory? - UK Politics and other stuff

Surely it’s not really either/or. You can call it an anti-democratic coup AND point out the hypocrisy of certain elements were things the other way round.

No 10 now saying they’ll deselect any tory MPs who vote to prevent a no deal Brexit. Pretty clever tbh. This will discourage a few rebels but not enough to stop Parliament from forcing an extension, which gives Boris the perfect narrative for a GE: I tried my best to deliver Brexit but I need a stronger mandate.

Once you view everything through the lens of it’s all a con, and realise that Boris doesn’t want a no deal Brexit but knows that he has to LOOK LIKE he wants one so he can make a pact with Farage and consolidate power, it all makes sense.

It does and it doesn’t. As ever with the UK’s response to Brexit it imagines it to be a purely domestic issue, and pretends that the EU doesn’t exist.

All well and good if Johnson thinks he has a strategy to consolidate his hold on the Tory party and win a GE, but if he’s hardened the Tory position and made compromise even more unlikely everything from before still holds. The EU will not change their deal in response to ‘toughness’ and they will not accept hand waving as a solution to the Irish border, and the Tory party will never vote for the agreement as it stands. No deal will happen then whether Boris really wanted it or not.

It’s like an entire nation slowly committing mass suicide via safety pin

Sort of, except it’s 52% (of 72%) of a nation stabbing themselves and the other 48%.

Or more correctly it’s ~12 narcisistic lunatics holding an entire country hostage for the sake of their own grandiose dreams of power.

Mmmm. Doubt that editorials like this (Wall Street Journal) are going to exactly help the political case for a comprehensive free trade deal with the US as an alternative to the EU https://t.co/dxpwAsJnod pic.twitter.com/KzDYre7NTJ

Sure we’re going to bankrupt your NHS but at least the chinless ■■■■■ in The City who you all hate and are tangentially the reason for this whole mess will be able to make even more money. What a deal!

When de Pfeffel Johnson calls a snap election endangering the entire country just to cling onto personal power and then still gets an 80+ seat majority because middle england is frightened by the daily mail that corbyn is planning their deaths I don’t know how I’m going to live in this country any more.

This was my favourite bit. Not sure what will happen later but I’m sure it’ll be a sound basis for the future of the UK!
