Kinda worth unrolling that thread:
Now - is it inherently antisemitic to say something untrue about the state of Israel? By my measure, no. I feel where criticism of Israel becomes antisemitic is a) where they are held to a higher standard than other countries, probably not the case here and (donât yell yet)
B) where falsehoods about the state of Israel are rooted in long-held antisemitic tropes. Still with me? OK so hereâs where we need some more context. There is an age-old blood libel trope where historically Jews have been accused of secretly orchestrating disasters 4/
I think, given that the accusation is demonstrably false, given that there is a widespread far-right conspiracy theory that Jews are trying to start a race war & given that there have been multiple incidents of Jews as a collective being blamed for anti-Black racism⌠5/
âŚthat the surrounding context makes a conspiracy theory which is on the surface of it about Israel much more likely to be rooted in antisemitic sentiment. Phew. So given that I just had to explain all of this, could RLB have been expected to know this? 6/
(Brakes squealing) whoah, whoah, whoah, what? What conspiracy theory? Hereâs what Peake says in the interview:
As we speak, Black Lives Matter protestors are out on the streets after yet another killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, by police.
âI donât know how we escape that cycle thatâs indoctrinated into us all,â continues the 45-year-old. âWell, we get rid of it when we get rid of capitalism as far as Iâm concerned. Thatâs what itâs all about. The establishment has got to go. Weâve got to change it.â Born in Bolton to a lorry driver father and care worker mother, Peake is strident and expressive; if religion wasnât anathema to her, sheâd be perfect in the pulpit. âSystemic racism is a global issue,â she adds. âThe tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floydâs neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services.â (A spokesperson for the Israeli police has denied this, stating that âthere is no tactic or protocol that calls to put pressure on the neck or airwayâ.)
Thatâs not a conspiracy theory. Itâs not a theory at all! Itâs an apparently inaccurate claim about the specifics of a real phenomenon (Israeli security services training US cops), predicated on the assumption that Israelâs approach to protestors etc is worthy of criticism. Thatâs not antisemitic.
As I see it, Peakeâs statement is being stretched unrecognisably out of shape so it can constitute a âconspiracy theoryâ â presumably tricking American cops into murdering black people or whatever â so that Long-Baileyâs retweeting the article containing it can be construed as antisemitic. And this Gibbs person continues:
At this point, there is no excuse for her not to know better. And yes, this decision is partly political, but itâs also of her own making. RLB was closely tied to the Corbyn project, which caused so much pain for so many Jewish people across the political spectrum
Yeah I should say so. Still not seeing much criticism of Peake, or of the Independent. I suppose they debunked the claim in the article itself, strange how Long-Baileyâs not being praised for retweeting that bit of it, though. Bollocks. Transparent stitch-up.
That was a while coming lol, congrats.
