Canada also has a wide variety of lounge types to meet your lounging needs.

Lounge is a funny word. Lounge. I’m now not sure it’s a word.

Yeah it’s a lot closer now although I’d still rather be in the US.

I’m just setting the table of the stuff they were into politically. Also a lot of anti-consumerism zines. I don’t think there was a serious attempt by either of them to weave the whole thing into a consistent narrative.

One died from auto-erotic asphyxiation at age 30 while a successful NYC lawyer. The other one went from molotov-cocktail-advocating radical lefty to hardcore Trumpfan.

This argument occurred at the Democratic Convention in '88 in in Atlanta where we somehow bluffed our way to get Staff badges, which meant endless open bars and parties and getting into clubs at age 18 w/o a fake ID. We did like 2 hours of actual volunteer work the whole week. Good times.

I’m holding you personally responsible for the Dukakis loss.

I like to think we helped a little.

I think this kind of thing happens a lot in what I call first order intelligent people. This is the lowest form of being “smart” where you are just smart enough to see the evident bullshit in conventional wisdom, but not smart enough to really generate creative ideas of your own and test them relentlessly with genuine intellectual curiosity. I’ve met a lot of people like this and they tend to bounce around between “edgy” “alternative” views, i.e. communism or libertarianism or anarchism.

Yeah I’d say this fits this guy pretty well. Whenever I’d try to have a deeper dive into these political concepts, which he was way into more than me, it seemed like he’d get kind of lost. Like he had mostly just a surface understanding. A big catalog list of radical ideas with no real coherence to them.

He was huge into and anarchy and I’d just constantly troll him with variations on “Road Warriors bro”. It used to drive him nuts. That and the massively pro-NAMBLA stance of the Anarchy! zine he loved so much. Hmmm maybe there’s a reason these guys want anarchy so bad.

Also by his own admission apparently he’s decided that he’s kinda racist - which I suspect 99% of hardcore Trump fans would admit to the right person with a few beers in them.

Well, I, er…having also read a small amount about Situationism when I was that age I don’t think they really got it.

See my post just above this. I just threw out Chomsky and Situationists as a couple examples of the stuff they were into. As long as it was radical and anti-America or anti-corporate/anti-consumer - they were into it.

The guy who was a lawyer actually turned out to do some pretty cool stuff - although he was a mess in his personal life. He was fighting hard for downtrodden type causes and had really big aspirations to make a difference. It really bums me to think what he could have become.

After he died, NYC bulldozed a squatter’s community garden that was right across the street from his apartment in the East Village. It was featured on an episode of the Sierra Club Chronicles. I’d like to think he could have prevented that somehow. I know he would have fought hard.

He also might have kept my other Trumpfan friend from going off the rails - as he mostly took his political cues from he lawyer friend.

Ok. That’s what grunchng does to a man’s posts. Makes them totally irrelevant.

Yeah I remember you mentioning him before. It’s a very salient example of the transition a disappointingly large number of people undergo from skint young person espousing leftist politics because it’s trendy but also because deep down they want a bigger slice of the financial cake for themselves, so no surprise when the little shits grow up, own houses and cars, start paying a lot more tax and become very right wing.

The most extreme example I can personally think of was a guy, Andy, who came from very humble roots (father worked on the railways), went to college with friends of mine and was a die-hard Communist, then got lucky and did very well in finance, ending up on the board of a large bank earning millions, marrying a posh girl, owning a huge house with stables and a Range Rover and voting Tory. Wanker.

It’s the reason why the current young demographic being predominantly Democrat is no reason at all to write off the GOP in the future.

He’s Schrodinger’s Dictator at this point.

Apparently he’s appeared (or claimed contemporary video of him has) on Chinese TV.

Proposal: change the thread title and update once there is news. This way the number of unread messages won’t matter.

I propose Schrodinger’s Kim Jong-un.

The only story here is the rumours, never anything else.

Or Kim Jong-un - do not update without corpse pics
