This is the important part. Iâm not really paying attention to the veepstakes, but I would be a little surprised if Shapiro is the best choice on the shortlist. But regardless, itâs almost certainly not a big deal, and Iâm quite confident that Harris wants to win this election really badly, so I feel pretty comfortable letting her make the call. Getting too invested in armchair quarterbacking about campaign tactics isnât a good idea.
But if youâre not operating on the assumption that all politicians are going to campaign in the way they think is going to give them the best chance to win, you have kind of an unrealistic view. Iâm idealistic enough to believe that politicians will govern in ways that hurt their electoral prospects if they have a chance to do something they really believe in, but theyâre not going to campaign on the unpopular things they deeply believe in, because then they wonât be able to do them!
