Jeopardy! Thread (No spoilers until after the show EST)

Need to dig out my rubber brick for every time MB says “that’s correct”.

Lady with pretty decent lead gets back to back DD and bets small and fails to secure lock game. Still wins in FJ. Karma sucks.

yeah I threw the remote at the TV when she bet $2000 instead of $3000

Thursday the scores were basically 20,000 vs 10,000 over halfway though and the trailer bet 5,000 on a DD. Wtf is the point.

Forgot to ask if anyone saw that terrible Daily Double question about an alternative to screen savers where the answer was “What is wallpaper?” Question was poorly worded and the answer seemed nonsensical to me. First time in a while I can remember feeling that way about a Jeopardy question.

Yeah apparently due to advancements in computer screen technology people don’t use screen savers to protect against screen burns anymore, they use… wallpaper???

What is BOV? (I laughed hearing him say it.)

Lol but seriously I got trapped there too. I took four years of Latin and don’t recall the word vacca at all. I do clearly remember bovis and taurus though and assume most contestants would know those roots. Our Latin instructor placed zero emphasis on vocabulary and would have us diagram entire passages of Cicero or whatever analytically without translating a single word. Maybe that’s the correct approach if you’re going for a PhD in the classics or something, but we were in high school.

Recent knowledge of French was likely a big help to the champ here, as cow translates to vâche.

Yeah, perhaps multiple romance languages could help more than Latin if the word for cow is obvious and taken from vacca. I remember that the argument for Latin was that it would be useful in scientific fields, especially medicine. In retrospect, that is completely silly advice given by people who didn’t have STEM degrees and probably never studied Latin. Also, the common “taken from the Latin” phrases you see in trivia questions can get really loose or bastardized in translation, so it’s arguable whether knowing Latin even helps for those. You’re almost certainly better off just memorizing them.

Yeah so looks like a lot of people are saying they knew it from the Spanish or French. Meanwhile, if you actually know some medical science Latin derivatives, you could easily fall into the bovine trap. For example, mad cow disease is bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Plenty of stuff on bovine hormones / analytes if you read medical science. Basically what I’m saying is don’t study Latin, it’s useless.

Making the jump from cows to vaccination is a pretty big ask.

I was also stuck in the Bovine trap

Agreed. If you know the history, it makes sense (cliffs: Discovery that milkmaids and other folks who were previously exposed to cowpox seemed to be protected from smallpox ----> first smallpox vaccine was derived from cowpox), but in a vacuum it’s definitely hard to see the connection.

Yeah, knowing the origin of the word vaccine is all it takes.

I think it’s one of those you either know or you don’ts disguised as one that you can reason out.

GAME RECOGNIZE GAME, the Gen-X energy is strong in this clip.

Allan, what a child Friday in the third podium

DD-1 he leaves a few hundred behind

DD-2 he leaves a few thousand behind

DD-3 middle podium nails a true 7,000 DD which brings Allan back into the game for FJ

21,800
14,000
10,000- he wagers 5,000. Didn’t matter but he gave himself 0 chance and could have been in 2nd easily with bigger DD wagers vs a multi day champ. What a tool.

Rubber brick award.

Anybody sample Outer Range yet?

Math is hard.

And now we get Karma. Our champ gets saved

20,800 -4,001 16,799
9,800 +2,000 11,800
12,400 -9,000 3,400

The middle podium gets the rare WWR, is in range because the third podium hit then last $2,000 clue BUT is just happy to be there. JFC.

Like, you know exactly what the leader is going to bet. How do you not fucking cover there?

How much money has been lost on Jeopardy over the years due to terrible bet strategy? Multiple tens of millions?

How is bet strategy not the first thing you learn when you find out you are going on the show?
