Jeopardy! Thread (No spoilers until after the show EST)

Yea really drove me nuts when they both started doing this during their runs:

But like pvn said, its less this and more that we had been watching them for months and little things that were probably there from the beginning were becoming more obvious.

It’s a rough FJ question to answer under pressure. Pretty sure most contestants would get it with a few minutes to think about it and $0 on the line.

For me I got it right away, but only because when I thought “what letter would go before “h””, my first thought was “s”

If you started off thinking “th” or “gh” or “ah” it would be tough

That’s the smart way to do it. I just started listing off countries with big populations until I found it.

Obviously, everyone has their mannerisms (I actually made a joke to my wife the other day mimicking Amy’s little head tilt and grin), but I think a lot of it just has to do with the awkwardness of not be allowed to fucking talk. It’s got to be hard to stand there and not react too much (though some people do have big reactions to their correct guesses).

I did like her hard concentration face during a Daily Double yesterday.

The doofus with Riddler glasses seems like a fun contestant, hope he does well.

He was surprisingly quick on the buzzer. At the first commercial break my wife said “uh oh, this one could be real trouble.”

All the points to her I guess. She had said that about one other contestant in Amy’s streak and that was a non-runaway game as well.

On another note, I looked at the list of top ten most populous countries, and I had NO IDEA that U.S. is #3. None. If someone had told me that I would have inwardly rolled my eyes and thought they were stupid.

I’m not even sure I was positive we were top 10. For top 5 I would have gone

China
India
Pakistan
Indonesia
Nigeria or Brazil

And I wouldn’t have felt great about the order of 3-5. After that I probably would have figured out that U.S. is in the top 10, I hope. I knew we have over 300 million, and it doesn’t feel like Mexico and Russia have more people than that. I think I would have come up with Indonesia and Bangladesh for top 10 (if I had even thought of Bangladesh).

I think I might have mistakenly put Japan, Philippines, and/or Egypt into the top 10.

Japan is probably too small by area right? Especially since a pretty large portion of the country is still rural.

Also, between Chicago librarian, and “Countries of the World” FJ, is this the most “universe is actually a simulation” loss possible for Amy? Im wondering if she hit any similarities to Ken’s losing game.

It used to be in the top 10, was recently passed by Mexico as its population growth has stalled. It’s three times the size of Bangladesh, so could easily have more.

I feel like if that guy had lost, it would become the setup for The Riddler’s backstory. Like he was humiliated at Jeopardy so he turns to a life of crime and his new goal is to humiliate The Batman through riddles.

I was really impressed how he kept his cool after losing all of his points on the missed DD in the first round. I assumed he was going to fade away after that.

I was so annoyed at the wagering on Monday (I think it was Monday). Don’t remember the exact figures, but the guy in the middle got the last Daily Double with only a handful of answers remaining. He was in second place, maybe like $3,500 or so behind the champ. Third place had something like $200, wasn’t a factor.

Dude did not bet enough to take the lead had he gotten it right. I eyeballed it and picked $5,000 as a decent wager - would have given him the lead and a little cushion in case his opponent got some of the last few responses.

I’m cool with playing it safe, but in this case, it didn’t seem to make sense to me. He willingly let himself not be in control of his own destiny in Final Jeopardy. He got it wrong (and Final, I believe), but it really didn’t matter. He gets it wrong, he still has a chance in Final. He gets it right, but doesn’t bet enough to take the lead, he still has a chance in Final, but really the same chance he had if he gets it wrong, assuming the other guy doesn’t bet stupidly (it wouldn’t have been a runaway).

But if he gets it right and goes into Final with the lead, now he can still win if he gets Final wrong. Without the lead, the chances of that are much less, assuming non-dumb wagering (I might be off here - I have never studied proper wagering). Basically, he controls his own destiny if he has the lead, and is at the mercy of the other player if he doesn’t.

So much this. She’s just so artificial as a host. She comes across as an actress playing a role more than a regular person.

She’s fine if she just does the tournaments (except the ToC).

I dread the fake shock / surprise of every DD
