House Judiciary Committee is going to hold a public hearing on Dec 4 per CNN:
The committee announced that it would hold a hearing on Dec. 4 on the āconstitutional grounds for presidential impeachment,ā which will have a panel of expert witnesses who will testify āon the application of the constitutional framework of high crimes and misdemeanors to the very serious allegations regarding the conduct of the President," according to a Democratic aide.
I donāt think this will happen, but if a 51/49 majority in the Senate vote to convict, that would be a huge deal and damaging to Trump politically.
I actually think this is close to the most likely outcome. Removal is impossible, but there are enough Republicans who 1) hate him and 2) arenāt up for re-election for a good long time and 3) were the people who wrote the after action report in 2013 who probably still quietly believe that this is a dead end for the party.
Romney, Collins, and then there are a bunch of random maybeās. Collins can vote to convict or sheāll 100% lose reelection and Romney is independently politically powerful and despises Trump and everything he stands for.
Narrator: all GOP Senators and a few Dems voted to acquit
They can do that if they wantā¦ but itās bad for the brand long term. Thereās almost zero brand equity left with people under 35 right now.
Acquitting Trump will make his behavior even worse. Good luck defending your vote when his insanity goes into overdrive.
I literally canāt even imagine the shit heās going to pull during the lame duck period if he loses, knowing the office is the only thing standing between him and death in jail.
Being malignant isnāt enough to be dangerous. You also have to be competent. Trump got himself into this mess by being massively early on the Biden thing. He created this four alarm dumpster fire to dirty up a candidate that hasnāt even won the primary yet.
As long as we keep him occupied and on defense with the impeachment thing he wonāt have the bandwidth to do much elseā¦ and his underlings are wildly incompetent grifters. This too shall pass.
Heās going to try to stay obviously. Itās also not going to work, obviously. Heās managed to systematically infuriate everyone heād need to stay in power.
Yeah my good luch wishes were to the republican senators. They should know that Trump is going to pull a lot of shit if they vote to acquit, and they will have explicitly enabled it. I hope it hurts them really bad electorally.
Theyāre closer to toss ups than they are to being California.
I agree, Iāve been on this possibility for weeksā¦ But itās not seeming particularly likely right now.
Collins and Gardner are the most likely in my opinion. Still, those and Romney only gets you to 50-50. Iād take that, but if I had to guess right now Iād say under 50.
Thatās okay, theyāre well on their way to not needing to win free and fair elections anymore.
If we manage to win, the lame duck is going to be nuts, but heās never going to jail. Heās probably more likely to pull off staying in office after losing than he is to spend a day in jail.
Romney doesnāt despise Trump and agrees with almost all of his policies - he just dislikes him personally. He said as much in an Axios interview where he doesnāt like means but likes the ends.
Some people are theorizing heāll resign one day before inauguration just to have pence pardon him.
I guess he probably wonāt think of doing that and just trash the place on the way out.
Catching up.
A few thoughts.
- The southern red states would have been more like Latin America or the Caribbean than the north, if had gone their own way in the civil war.
Things have obviously changed since then, but could provide a few clues for what it would look like now.
-
Dictators/fascists die all the time. Sometimes it leads to change, but often you just get the power structures around them cling to power or make it worse.
-
Trump actually declining obviously and cognitively could impact the election. But how? What happens if he refuses to debate?
-
Even if dems win. Itās not clear they will do anything to fix the structural issues.
- voting rights act.
- statehood for PR.
- stack the supreme court.
- reverse citizens United
- green new deal.
You literally need all five. Else we all (non-americans included) are fucked.
