Iowa Caucus Predictions... SEASON Thread

shadow is a developer.

Shadow makes a text banking app. I posted a screenshot up thread.

Pete, Biden, Gillibrand (and Hillary and Obama) use/paid for that text banking app.

Shadow also made the caucus app that caused trouble. The IDP and NVdems paid for that app.

This is like blaming an overwatch player for a world of warcraft server crash.

But by all means, keep going…I’m enjoying the creativity. I’ll admit, it is kind of scary how fast they can come up with these things. It’s giving those Q people a run for their money.

Yeah. We don’t know what went wrong yet, it could be a server issue, who knows.

I agree that it seems like this could have been done more simply, like why have a phone app at all, just use a secured web app. I don’t know what the parameters are though, maybe they don’t want the data in cloud storage or whatever.

My sense is that they required supervisors to take a photo of the results and upload them to the app you’d get like 80-90% who know how to take a photo and upload. Probably another 15% won’t have the right data plan/signal. Some never installed the app due to security warnings, maybe 20% (overlapping), plus some dead batteries, plus excessive bandwidth usage at some locations, plus actual bugs with the app/servers. I mean, what could go wrong?

Oh, and maybe 80-90% who own and have basic familiarity with a smart phone. A lot of these volunteers are 75 y/o+.

Who knows, I’m sure the truth will out eventually. According to the IDP Communications Director, “the app did not go down”:

probably a lot of connectivity problems, combined with PEBKAC errors. Iowa has shit internet in rural areas (which is most of the state, lol)

It no doubt performed better than expected, because it had less than 50% of anticipated usage.

why did they even change to reporting all 3 numbers?

From what I understand, people argued it was more transparent. Which it is, but my sense is that they didn’t really think through the mechanics.

yeah, on one hand seeing the actual math behind the SDEs is good, but logistically, it’s kind of a nightmare

Yes. There are independent groups that check the integrity of democratic votes all over the world while assuming that America is clean.

Perhaps they shouldn’t.

FWIW these are more the things I was talking about (am not qualified to judge SQL vulnerability). Admit I’m guessing a lot, but it sounds like a problem that didn’t need an app done in too short a timescale, by a software house that was happy to take the money and not give sensible advice. Which is incredibly commonplace.

Maybe Iowa will move to a primary next time.

Can’t believe caucuses are still a thing.

Only semi-related. My sense is that all these folks focused on voting cyber security kind of miss the point. Cyber security is like Trump’s wall, where the real issue is tunnels, and ramps, and ladders, and catapults, and airplanes. We can all agree it’s an impressive wall, if people cooperate with the designer’s limited conception of the domain, where there’s a certain blindness to how things actually work.
