I think itās been 12 teams since the 90s, but that presents issues as well b/c there are only 10 CONMEBOL teams so they have to invite 2 random teams (Mexico, Qatar, USA, Japan at certain points). 8/12 is still quite stupid, so yah it probably wins the prize for dumbest group stage, at least until the 48-team World Cup.
They actually had some interesting formats when they only invited the 10 CONMEBOL teams:
For awhile there would be 3 groups of 3 and the 3 group winners advanced to the semis along with the winner of the previous Copa America. Creative, but not sure I like it.
By far the best format was when there were 2 groups of 5, and the top 2 of each group advanced to the semis.
It will always be a little tricky with 10 teams, but I think that last format works quite well.
I think the best solution would be if they could somehow do a Copa America that comprised all the Americas (i.e. CONCACAF also). Then you could have 16 teams with most of them being competitive and go to the 4x4 groups which works so well. It would give the USA the potential to creat some new rivalries w/South American powers. I think thatās one way soccer has been a bit slower to take off in the USA. Besides Mexico, there isnāt really a rival anyone cares about. Hopefully Canada will develop more in the coming years, but I think CONCACAF is just too limited as a federation, and Costa Rica and Panama are trending down, so the cupboard is even more barren.
Yeah Iād be super happy if there was a 16 team cross Americaās tournament on one of the gold cup years. All 10 CONMEBOL + 6 CONCACAF w/ qualifying. 4 groups, top 8 make it out
SFA old farts need to be burned to the ground,
Always choosing managers who love settling for trying not to lose. Fucking always for the last couple decades.
Clarke saying sāthing like [paraphrasing] āweāll play and enjoy ourselves as much as the opponents allow us to play.ā
jfc, thatās giving up the winning anything option before a ballās kicked. Thatās the SFA style for ya.
Ally MacLeod & co at least had some ambition.
Edit: fn hope Iām wrong and we come out w some fire and actually show something here. Been fkn waiting long enough.
I wish those were our only problems at the SFA as then it could be put down to compidence and your right with our line of managers
Unfortunately what Marty means is that itās been rife with bigitory for a number of years and has caused many Scots to feel ashamed at its actions throughout the decadeās.
