Gotta mention the POR-FRA penalty shootout.
Bunch of fkn great penalties! Best shootout I’ve seen. No fancy Panenka BS, just several awesome penalties. Even the one miss was 2” away from being raved about as unstoppable.
I rewatched it 3 times (just in case I ever end up in a penalty shootout in a major international tournament I guess…).
Great stuff
The squad has a few problems:
The passing midfielders you can pair with Declan Rice are super, super green. One is Mainoo, a kid who just started getting regular PL minutes this calendar year and is 2 years away from likely being an average starter.
The other is Wharton, whom Palace bought in January from the championship and is slightly better but playing for a midtable team so hes further down the pecking order.
Then, that you only had Shaw as a left footed full back and yesterday was his first action since February.
Everything else in the squad is there, its just more that Southgate wont use Gordon or sit one of kane/foden/jude.

Yamal gotta be the highest value player in the world… turns 17 saturday.
I hate that there’s not a stiffer penalty than a yellow for these late game (American) football tackles from behind to prevent attacks. Seen at least one in nearly every game in the knockouts.

Spain manager looks like WWE’s Adam Pearce.
On behalf of a grateful Nation, I’d like to thank all the Spaniards who’ve helped the Basque National team to the finals.

Did England do the bribes? What an atrocious penalty.
Of course it’s all different players now, but I will never forget the night I was in San Sebastian/Donostia and the Basque team played a “friendly” match against Bolivia. This was in December of 2012, Spain had won the Euros that year (though that was the height of Barca dominance) and the town was football crazy! Pic is from our hostel balcony the afternoon of the match. We went down and joined later.
Real Sociedad is still my Liga team because of this.

yeah i thought it was soft but whatevs
I don’t watch enough soccer to know, but was the keeper in a bad position on that winning goal? I know you have to cover near post but he was practically on the post (or nearly past it, even). Great finish to score in the one spot possible but seemed like the keeper could’ve been a step or so to his right and it would’ve covered both posts sufficiently.
Congrats England! Gonna have to cheer for my Sociedad boys in the final, though.

Eh, not sure Id have him top 5 or 10. He had one decent season in Spain but not superstar numbers or anything vs guys like Jude, Foden, Saka being 20-22 and being top 10 players in the world and having double the goals/assists/more impactful general play.

No, just a very, very good turn and shot.

Lalas is infuriating.
My top choice for the job already took a new job, sadly.
