100% this. Principles matter.
That last line is a big part of why I think not impeaching is wrong and long-term dangerous. It sends the message that it was silly to impeach Clinton, and it would be EQUALLY SILLY to impeach Trump. A lot of people felt like it was none of their damn business whether the president gets a blowjob, so it was no wonder that there was backlash for impeachment proceedings.
Even for those who think it was wrong and lying about it is impeachable, they’d rather it never happen again. I mean honestly, if impeachment proceedings began over Donald Trump lying about whether he slept with Hope Hicks, I’d have the same reaction. FFS, is this really what we’re doing?
But Trump’s behavior is so fantastically different that I feel like I’m living in a different reality when people discuss them as though they belong anywhere in the same context.
I’m thinking not just about the uproar from people who were never going to support impeachment. I’m thinking about how their rage against impeachment would affect public perception. I’m thinking how very public and constantly televised analysis of Trump’s criminality will leave even less cover not just for politicians but for average Americans not to condemn Trump’s acts. I’m thinking how this is the exact opposite of the Clinton impeachment. People who thought it was right but stupid to impeach Clinton aren’t going to have the same response this time.
This is right and this is smart, and if this isn’t impeachable then nothing is. That’s the long-term danger. Yes it sucks to impeach and fail, but it sucks even more to send the message that no President will ever deserve to be impeached again.
AOC can’t always be right, but if you disagree with her you ought to at least entertain the notion that maybe you’re wrong.

He’s just saying the quiet parts out loud - there’s plenty of that kind of attitude around here and it isn’t just him. I think he is a good poster if he just toned down the edgelording. I agree with a lot of what he has to say.
