Yes. And I believe you are a good person to do so.
I mean people will say that is a stupid thing to say, not your stupid. Really they are both calling someone stupid, mostly. They also get hidden in snark, sarcasm and condescension.
You can make a rule they are not allowed. But they will still be there, just underneath the covers.
Im not even really sure what rules are being proposed accept dont be a ass. Which i would guess includes no insults. And like i said you can still be an ass without them.
I just like it when everyone is kind of an asshole is the thing. But that means we get out of line from time to time. And that’s okay as long as we all agree to chill the fuck out if someone says to chill the fuck out.
I like the idea of community policing of sorts. Just hope its somewhat even handed.
And when that does not work mods can move the argument to its own thread so the people who do not like the petty bickering can get some peace.
We only need one rule here
Here’s how to put this into action
- Type out a post
- Ask yourself “Am I being a c*nt in this post?”
3a. If you think you might be, don’t post it
3b. If you know you’re not one, post
If everyone does this, the community will improve dramatically.
Disagree. The people who most need to modulate their behavior tend to be the least willing and least aware they need to.
I do like the spirit of it though.
Sort of like Joss Whedon saying, “Just be yourself…unless you’re a dick.”
Shame he turned out to be something of one himself.
That can be said about every set of rules and laws in existence.
It’s why consequences need to exist for breaking that very simple rule.
Fair enough
I’d vote for more moderation if I trusted all of the current mods not to abuse it.
The attempt to define what is and isn’t acceptable is virtually impossible because we’re dealing with the nuances of language, not the absolutes of science, and will be gamed by some mods in favour of their pals, as always.
And when the current mod profile is 100% US and mostly conservative (“centrist” itf), that combination doesn’t bode well for some of us who will be held to a higher standard of posting than members of the “old boys club”.
iow this bit
is the problem.
eg (I’m spoilering this because I don’t want to be accused of reigniting the row)
I responded to an insult that said it would only be a matter of time until I “slipped up” and posted something sexist, by pointing out that the accuser had in fact previously been guilty of sexism by his own admission when he had posted something pervy.
This then escalated as everyone knows, and when a mod (Wookie) appeared in the French BBV thread out of people’s normal sight, I and another poster were told by the mod to “fuck off”.
Who was I supposed to have PM’d about this behaviour? Another mod who’s also one of his pals? We have a right to less bias from mods than this.
I voted that for the status quo but I don’t mind a rule against personal attacks. In general I think rules like that only work if people buy in to a much wider civility, and isn’t about the particular rule wording or even rule following. Making one could be a catalyst, though, and if so that would be A Good Thing.
I do have concerns that it might be being introduced hand-in-hand with a narrative where what we saw recently was just errors on one side and suffering on the other, but hopefully any new rule would be implemented independently.
Typical lefty mods have got to go

I think some of the personal animosity and attacks are a direct result of the light-handed modding. It’s people trying to mod the forum on their own. I know I do this. If you feel there is a poster not getting modded one solution, however poor, is to target that poster in the attempt to get them to moderate their own behaviour. I think this is a much worse solution than if the mods just applied some basic moderation. It’s guaranteed to create personal rivalries and drama.

we are a politics forum. Everything that happens here is viewed through that lens. While 99% of the general population would view us all as from the exact same narrow slice of the political spectrum, we all know there are significant differences. These differences colour so much of what goes on here, including modding. Already itt some of the people from the further left are complaining all the mods just favour those closer to the center (one called them conservatives!) while others closer to the center are complaining those further to the left are given too much rope. Posters are always going to assume they are being modded due to their politics rather than their behaviour even though it will be 99% the latter. The solution is for mods to seriously question their moderation if the target is someone from the “other side”. Use a slightly higher threshold for intervention if you think there is a chance you might be targeting someone outside your political spectrum. Perhaps confirm with a mod who is closer to the poster on that metric as a self-check against this bias. If this is done it’s hard to see how posters can claim bias.
IMO, the biggest issue is not the personal attacks, its the rehashing of old arguments/attacks where they are in no way relevant to the current discussion. If someone makes a creepy post, I think it should be fine to call them out on it - and the distinction between that was a creepy post and you’re a creep should not matter. If that argument then goes too far, it can be contained pretty easily.
The problem seems to be when those posters have an argument on a completely different subject and the attack of “you’re creepy” is thrown in again (or in some situations where one poster launches an old line of attack sua sponte). It makes the board unreadable when the same argument is happening across multiple threads.
It seems odd to me in a forum full of people who think the government can be the solution to real life problems that we want our community to be ungoverned.
To be fair I think this place is a roaring success. I don’t think most times the good content is overrun by the squabbling. I don’t think we need to go from what we have to a fully moderated every post at risk of deletion system. But it’s obvious we have a problem right now. It seems a lot of people are tired of threads turning into proxies for old grievances. A lot of people are tired of the 2-3 other threads that spring out of that. It seems some are tired of the asymetric warfare aspect of being civil in discussion while some aren’t. Attempting to solve some or all of those issues isn’t a bad thing. Obviously the best thing to do is to have people drop their grudges and resume engaging people in good faith. If that isn’t possible then some other solution is going to have to be found. Lastly this place will never be perfect. It’s pretty damn good now and I would guess some people are just averse to change.
You made an asshole post that served no purpose other than to stir shit up and make someone else feel shitty.
I’m perfectly fine if it was a threat. If i was a mod I wouldve temped you.
Let’s not turn the thread about moderating petty fights into a petty fight guys.
Dont flatter yourself I have no idea who you are
I don’t think this is quite it. No one apart from totalitarians thinks that government can be the solution to everything. When people irl clash verbally because of mutual dislike no one thinks of getting an agent of the government to help.
That would only make matters worse because of an actual (or perceived) bias…which was my point.
