I guess we need a Summer Olympics thread…?

The Fiji national team came into my gym a couple years ago or so when they were in town for some kind of rugby nationals. I swear I recognize like 3/4 of them. It was fun watching them all workout and mess around with each other.

Pretty good showing by Japan; I think they came closer to beating Fiji than NZ did.

I guess I won my water polo bet.

Dog paddle.

I’m watching men’s beach volleyball and it seems like people setting are now basically catching the ball and then pushing it up? I remember 4000 years ago in middle school/junior high/high school that it was really emphasized you couldn’t “catch” the ball but rather had to make the set a legit two-handed hit. Am I reading too much into this one match? Or have the rules been relaxed? Or is my whole premise made up based on poor memory?

edit: hah, I make that post and within 5 minutes a team gets called for a double-touch on a set.

Not watching so not sure of the context but IIRC there’s a very fine line that they have to walk because overhead sets also can’t spin. They have to kinda catch the ball so they can send it up in a deadspin but it can’t come to a stop in their hands.

When I play we either ignore that rule (because setting without spin is fucking hard) or we just bump-set.

Yeah dog paddle would be way better than any of the other slow strokes because it’s funny and visually distinctive. Like swimming is all just dudes or ladies chugging through the water, is anyone all oh man it’s the butterfly, this is my favorite? How can you even tell.

There’s always some level of catching going on, but you won’t see what you’re talking about in the indoor game. The calls on setting are much more relaxed in the beach game though.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks.

Czechs set to dominate women’s tennis. Got Czechs in both final matches. So at least two silvers (hopefully two golds) coming in.

Other than that it’s been rough. Got two medals in men’s trap (gold and silver), a silver in canoeing and bronze in fencing.

Adam Ondra’s gonna be climbing. Since he’s GOAT climber I’m sure he’ll pull in a medal.

Devastating loss for the “Israeli” baseball team. First they lost their starting pitcher, former reds Jon Moscot to an injury 4 pitches. They tied the game at 5-5 in the 9th with former reds Ryan Lavranway second home run of the game.

Only to lose the game in extra innings on a back-to-back hit by pitch :(

Breaststroke and butterfly are the hardest strokes to master. Much more dependent on timing of strokes and kicks

May be slower, but honestly much more difficult to do well.

Source: swam competitively (summer and winter) from age 6 through high school. Never mastered butterfly. I think my arms are too short.

Yeah I get that there’s tremendous skill involved in the different strokes, but what’s the point in having the different strokes? Why isn’t the backstroke and butterfly regarded the same as backwards running or the actual sport of race walking? Like if backwards running was a thing in the olympics people would devote their lives to and and they’d be incredibly skilled at backwards running. People would say, you know, backwards running is actually much harder than regular running…and they’d be right. But it would still be kind of dumb, right?

Backstroke > crawl because breathing is easy.

Kind of put another way, do the freestyle guys poke fun at the butterfly and breast stroke guys? Because you KNOW Usain Bolt would be laughing at the backwards 100m dash guys behind their backs.

Yes, that is exactly what is happening. Nailed it.

Except Wakaichiro was born and raised in the States, and I think he now works at a restaurant in New York.

In case it gets lost in the list
