I guess we need a Summer Olympics thread…?

Bronze medal rugby match coming up in 5 minutes and then the gold medal match.

Fiji lighting em up. Come on!

How did he not get tackled there!!

I’m slightly irritated that 7s was picked for the Olympics instead of Union.

It’d be impossible. Fairly sure World Rugby mandates 5 days break between games or something minimum, so could only have 3 games max.

Amusing aside regarding Fiji 7s, this is a great quote from their 2016 olympic winning coach comparing working for Fiji to working for the English rugby union:

‘I much preferred Fiji – even with a dictator in charge, a boss who was convicted for manslaughter, my phone being bugged, the bankruptcy and black magic – than my last year at the RFU’

Thank you, Unstuck, we won our bet. +$7.25 for China winning synchronized diving on a $20 bet. Also was +32 on a $20 bet for Reds over Cubs.

I’ve got $20 on Matsayuma to win golf at 10/1.

This helps explain it a lot better than “we need to talk about mental health” imo.

TOKYO — Imagine flying through the air, springing off a piece of equipment as you prepare to flip on one axis while twisting on another. It all happens fast, so there’s little time to adjust. You rely on muscle memory, trusting that it’ll work out, because with so much practice, it usually does.

But then suddenly, you’re upside down in midair and your brain feels disconnected from your body. Your limbs that usually control how much you spin have stopped listening, and you feel lost. You hope all the years you’ve spent in this sport will guide your body to a safe landing position.

When Simone Biles pushed off the vaulting table Tuesday, she entered that terrifying world of uncertainty. In the Olympic team final, Biles planned to perform a 2½-twisting vault, but her mind chose to stall after just 1½ twists instead.

“Simply, your life is in danger when you’re doing gymnastics,” said Sean Melton, a former elite gymnast who dealt with the twisties through his entire career. “And then, when you add this unknown of not being able to control your body while doing these extremely dangerous skills, it adds an extreme level of stress. And it’s terrifying, honestly, because you have no idea what is going to happen.”

So - like getting the yips except it could kill you or paralyze you. Yeah that’s no good.

The swimming in different orders have been tried and don’t add much. There is already some in built change in races based on each medley swimmer having weak/strong strokes.

For rugby 7s you basically want punt returners and tackling corners. Pacman Jones would have been an animal.

I don’t know how to do that.

Lotta people who don’t give a shit about Larry Nassar with strong opinions on Biles. The defining characteristic of modern America is tens of millions of people with absolutely zero empathy for other human beings.

These are excellent explanations. It’s really more than just the yips, though.

People experience moments (or weeks or months) like this in every sport. We’ve seen baseball players flame out completely because they basically forgot how to throw in-game. Pitchers have games where their mechanics get all fucked up. Hell, that happened to me once or twice in high school - I had a game where my balance was all off, my mechanics were screwed, my arm slot felt terrible. I got through it and pitched ok even if I felt awkward, but worst case scenario, I need a relief pitcher (EDIT: and even this isn’t remotely close to Biles - these were just “one of those days” and the next day things were fine).

Worst case scenario, Biles breaks her neck.
