How do I cool my bedroom?

Put a fireplace in the main living area. Then you’ll always be able to go into the bedroom to cool off.

@tabbaker, what I usually do is vacation at my 2nd or 3rd home when the weather at my 1st doesn’t meet my standards.

You are really stepping up your game making us all wait weeks to share this joke that was already made itt several times. How Noel Cowardesque of you. You are a true treasure to the comedy world.

I’m here all week with that good-natured ribbing.

Srs, non-joke reply:

Poor ppl are the only ppl that even ‘get hot’ so maybe try being less poor.

I have a ChiliPad, which is similar but uses a mattress pad withth water in it that flows through a box that cools or heats it. It was about $500 iirc, but it’s great, you can set the temp (55-110 I think), and sheets or a blanket seem to help keep the coolness in a bit.

I had it in Vegas when the A/C stopped working at like 2am when it was like 110 degrees out. It kept it bearable - it couldn’t get it down where I like it (mid 60s), but I didn’t wake up in a pool of sweat either.

Obviously someone is going to go all OMG $500 that’s absurd… But I’ve had mine for 4+ years, and it’s still going. It should use way less power than a window a/c unit, so it should eventually pay for itself, and you could also use it to keep the bed toasty in the winter while leaving the heat set to like 60-65 to save money on that too.

As an added bonus I find that cranking the heat up on it when I’m sick makes me feel a lot better and shortens the duration of my colds. This is probably mostly a placebo effect and comfort thing, but I’ll take it. My theory is a fever helps you fight infection by raising your body temp, so warming up this way might help too.

Anyway, I’m a big fan obviously. It’s worth checking out.

The power thing is huge. Cooling or heating hundreds of unnecessary cubic meters of air is pure waste. Things like this save so much energy by only cooling the small amount of air under the covers.

Guy in Calgary has strong opinions about how much AC people need.

Ya I have super strong opinions by making one suggestion.

Good point. Just money-wise running a very small wall AC at night for one summer can cost $100 easy.

That’s like 10 to 12 pints of beer these days. AKA “a night out”.

The most offensive thing about the bedjet is that I could build something close enough for less than $50 in parts from Home Depot.

The picture I took in my first response was just from an image search, but looking up “DIY bedjet” on YT, I see it came from this video.

*it may be redneckish

I mean shit, the possibilities are endless here. You could power a computer fan off lithium batteries and place it inside an insulated fanny pack with ice, run some flexible hose or tubing out into your shirt and pants. Boom you have a portable PersonJet.

Batman: What thing can make you both cool and uncool simultaneously?
Robin: Icy Hot?
Batman: No Robin, it’s the portable PersonJet.
Robin: Holy smokes Batman, who would buy such a ridiculous device?
Batman: See joke in running thread, Robin.

Can confirm this works. We have a fireplace in the living room and it’s where the thermostat is also. So in the winter we sit around and read in the toasty living room before bedtime and then move to the nice cool bedroom for sleeping.
