All my friends are either married or single I guess. I always called my ex my gf. Partner would be so weird-sounding.

What if I told you sometimes people call their partner, baby? Which is crazy, because theyā€™re not a baby!

Same here, but I notice the younger generations in the US do use partner now. We always used significant other, old lady, gf, better half, etc.

Those youngs are going to get so confused when they go into the business world.

People sometimes have pet names for their partners they use in private.

Do they say ā€œIā€™m bringing my baby alongā€?

They might. I could see a biker saying that.

Rappers might say Iā€™m bringing my shortie along.

Well bikers are outliers who drink their own piss, so thereā€™s that. I thought we were talking about fairly normal examples of homo sapiens.

Partner is much, much more common now than it used to be for hetero couples for the reasons mr. oreo just mentioned. I use it regarding my ā€˜girlfriendā€™ maybe 30% of the time, and she uses it for me like 80%+. Iā€™m trying to get more consistent with using it but have a hard time breaking the habit.

Girlfriend just seems to understate it after a while.

Especially the cattle business.

Played golf like a month ago with a 40 something married couple. The husband called his wife variations of ā€œbuddy/bud/palā€ like you would one of your guy friends. To each their own I guess.

My wife calls me her partner all the time. I have met a ton of people who were confused that I am a man, including several dozen who were clearly disappointed. The lesbians have been trying to claim her as their own for years.

Holy shit

Wat

I donā€™t know when I hear partner I always assume same sex relationship until further clarified.

But you wish she was.

I know I know, report to the sexism thread.

Itā€™s data. I like data. More data, not less.

Thereā€™s also some parts of the country where partner is used to describe really close friends, for even more confusion.

I guess literally the meaning of ā€œgirlfriendā€ isnā€™t any more intimate than ā€œpartnerā€. But in practice partner still sounds way less intimate to me.

Whatā€™s wrong with ā€œloverā€? We should bring that back. Excuse me, I need to go make love to my lover.

Yeah but they pronounce it ā€œpardnerā€ which helps.
