Cutting a window into these bathrooms is an intimidation tactic designed to make sure students who use the so-called âgender-identityâ facilities â and, letâs be honest, any student who doesnât fit neatly into the worldview of the school boardâs far-right majority â know theyâre being watched, controlled and judged.
I mean thatâs the intent but they kind of lost their own bigoted plot when every kid is going to feel harassed.

Previously, one would need to apply for Critical Needs Assistance and it would be disbursed on a case-by-case basis. Here is the 1-pager on CNA from 2020, which was $500 and includes the eligibility at the bottom:
Applicants may be eligible for CNA if they:
- Complete a FEMA registration;
- Pass FEMAâs identity verification process;
- At registration, assert that they have critical needs and request financial assistance for those needs and expenses.
- Have a pre-disaster primary residence located in an area designated for CNA.
So, people were getting some relief in the form of Critical Needs Assistance but it was too cumbersome.
Then comes 2024 and Biden did a few updates, including this one:
- Establishing Serious Needs Assistance: FEMA is standardizing immediate financial support for survivors by replacing the Critical Needs Assistance program with a cash relief program called Serious Needs Assistance. Previously only provided based on a disaster-by-disaster evaluation, Serious Needs Assistance will now be available in all disasters receiving Individual Assistance. The payment of $750 for households with serious needs will help cover immediate expenses related to sheltering, evacuation and meeting basic household needs. This payment would be in addition to other eligible assistance that may be provided to survivors based on their unique circumstances.
Serious Needs Assistance increased the amount to $750 and made it much easier to access. The idea is it is a temporary amount of cash that can sustain a household for a short-term. $750 probably doesnât realistically move the needle for temporary housing when a disaster has displaced so many, but it is better than $500, which is also better than $0.
The other way FEMA disburses money to individuals, from my understanding, takes a much longer time and is tied to bunch of factors which are laid out here:
